Shamoian, Charles A.

Charles A. Shamoian, M.D., passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2014. He leaves behind his true companion and wife of fifty-two years, Paula Fae, his adored children, Paula Ann Katze and Chaz Shamoian, his much loved son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Michele, and grandchildren Jason, Evan and Briana. His generosity, love and warmth shone through in every moment with his family.

Charles was a first generation American, born on October 5, 1931 in Worcester, MA to Garabed and Anna Shamoian. After receiving his PhD and MD from Tufts University in Massachusetts, he joined the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College. His distinguished 38 year career included serving as Cornell's Director of the Division of Geriatric Services and President of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. According to his colleagues, Charles "epitomized the healing physician, asking little for himself, but demonstrating compassion, sensitivity, and dedication to his patients above and beyond at all times." Charles loved gardening, dogs of all shapes and sizes, first edition books, Yankees baseball, Brooks Brothers shirts, CNN news, and peanut butter anything. As a physician, a colleague, a husband, a father and a grandfather, he will be deeply missed and always loved.

Dr. Shamoian was my psychiatrist for many years, up until his retirement - which is the only reason I would ever have left his care. I loved him - plain and simple. He cared in a way that few PEOPLE ever do. I wish I had known about his passing before now. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest in Peace.

What other colleagues have written about Dr. Shamoian are similar to what I knew of him. I had the privilege of working with Charley for three years at the Partial Hospital. He was wise and caring with staff and patients. He sat with me the first time I had to tell a young college student and her family that she had the symptoms of schizophrenia. I'll never forget his kindness in this. I know many patients who have said he "saved my life" through his skill, in not only adjusting or changing their medications, but also through giving them hope and treating them as fellow human beings.

Dr. Shamoian was our Dept. of Nursing's first recipient of the Physician of the Year Award back in 2005 for his collegiality, collaboration, and contributions to nursing practice.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and all of the family at this time of great loss.

Dr. Shamoian "call me Charly" welcomed me 8 years ago as a new attending psychiatrist "come sit here next to me" on my first attending call night at the hospital. I watched his kind, caring bedside manner with patients. I witnessed patient's and colleagues' faces light up when he greeted them again. Dr. Shamoian: a superb physcian healer, a treasured colleague and professional mentor. Such a career so well done. He is missed. A life well lived. He teaches me again.

Charlie Shamoian was larger than life as a person and as a physician. He practiced truly patient centered care before this ever became a focus in the hospital world. He was a warm, funny and very real person who touched the lives of patients and staff alike. He will be very much missed by all of us.
