Levy, Susan Schwartz

Susan Schwartz Levy of Rye Brook, New York, passed away on August 5th, 2017, following a long illness. Sue was the daughter of the late Nathaniel H. Schwartz, MD, and Cherry (Freidin) Schwartz. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James A Levy, MD. Sue is survived by her loving children, Jenni and Joe, and their spouses, David Smith and Susanne Rehnstrom, as well as her adored granddaughter, Emma Smith.

Sue was born in Port Chester and lived in the area most of her life. As a teenager, she competed and performed on ice with the Rye Figure Skating club and played basketball and lacrosse. She was educated at Rye Country Day School, where she made lifelong friendships, and attended Vassar College. She graduated from Barnard College with a degree in Fine Arts and a minor in French. Sue's gift for languages served her well; she worked for several years at the French Embassy in Manhattan while Jim completed medical school and residency.

Sue's greatest joy was spending time with her family and welcoming people to her home. Anyone who dropped by could expect lively company, a sympathetic listening ear, and delicious food and drink. She loved having her kids at home, preferably with all their friends.

The community benefited from Sue's years of volunteer work. She supported United Hospital through the 14th Twig and was one of the founders of the gift shop at the Rye Town Hilton, which benefited the hospital for many years. Sue worked tirelessly for the American Heart Association and the Prompters at Purchase College.

In her spare time, Sue created pottery and collected fine art. Those left behind will always remember her impeccable taste, her wit, and most of all her amazing heart.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 9th at Sharon Gardens, 273 Lakeview Ave, Valhalla, NY 10595. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lower Hudson Chapter of the American Heart Association or the Prompters of Purchase College.
