Ethel Dunn Obituary

Dunn, Ethel Louise Duffy

Dunn, Ethel Louise Duffy 86, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, September 28, 2017.

Ethel was born in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1931 to John Paul Duffy, a civil engineer and Ethel Louise Ferguson Duffy, a radiology nurse. She was a graduate of Bayside High and Katherine Gibbs School. In 1951 Ethel married Malcolm Francis Dunn, a U.S. Marine Sargent. The couple returned to New York from Camp Lejeune and settled in Bethpage, Long Island where they raised their four sons and daughter. The family moved to Katonah, NY in 1968, where Ethel worked at the Reader's Digest until co-founding a family-owned direct mail agency in 1972. Ethel served as CFO of Mal Dunn Associates until 1991, working alongside her husband and children.

Upon retirement Ethel moved permanently to Hilton Head where she lived for more than 25 years. An avid reader, traveler, bridge-player and a dog-lover, Ethel was also an excellent home cook and an aficionado of New England cuisine. Lobster and steamed pudding were personal favorites. She was a classical pianist and a long-time patron of the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, hosting several of the competition finalists.

Ethel enjoyed a life full of wonderful friendships and close family relations. She gave her love and kindness selflessly, caring for others throughout her life and sharing with everyone she met her grace and quiet wisdom.

Ethel is survived by her sons Gregory (JoAnne), Stephen (Rosy), Christopher (Claire) all of New York, a daughter Katherine Greggo (Michael) of Hilton Head, SC, 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and her loving dog Roxy.

She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Ethel Duffy, her husband Malcolm Dunn, her brother John Duffy and her son Russell Dunn.

Visitation will be held at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah, NY on Thursday, October 5th from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service with burial at Amawalk Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable contributions to the American Heart Association donatenow.heart.org, or the Hilton Head International Piano Competition at www.hhipc.org/supporters/sponsorship-opportunities/.
