Eleanor Steckler Obituary
Eleanor Steckler

Eastchester - Eleanor Steckler, born October 15, 1922, passed away at the age of 96 on December 28, 2018. Loving wife of the late Arthur Steckler and devoted mother to daughter Ellen Alexandra Steckler and her son Jon David Steckler (Ellen B.). Beloved grandmother to Sarah (Aaron), Ariel (Matthew), David, Rachel and great grandmother to Samuel. Adored by her long-time caregivers Paulina, Vivian and Bernice. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, sister Alexandra Merker, and longtime companion Peter Ballas.

Eleanor was born abroad in Lithuania to American Citizens Alexander Vitkauskas and Eleanor Maslauskas. When the family returned to the United States, they settled in New Jersey, where Eleanor and her sister Alexandra attended school. During World War II, both sisters patriotically worked for the war effort in an airplane factory, Eleanor as a bookkeeper in the accounting office and Alexandra as a rivitor on the factory floor. After the war, Eleanor met her husband Arthur Steckler and they were married in Mamaroneck on January 21, 1949. They built their dream home in the Lake Isle section of Eastchester, where they raised their two children. Eleanor was the Lake Isle Civic Association secretary for many years.

Shortly before Arthur's death in 1974, Eleanor enrolled in New York University School of Continuing Education, the Division of Business and Management. She subsequently became a real estate broker, and in 1978 she started her own firm 'Eleanor Steckler Real Estate' at a time when not many women ran their own businesses. Her company later changed its name to 'Steckler Real Estate' in Scarsdale, NY when her son Jon joined the business. Eleanor had a long and successful career, and was well respected by her clients and peers. Since her retirement, Jon has continued her legacy as principal broker of the business.

Eleanor will be remembered as a strong, independent woman. She loved painting, sailing, golfing, and most of all her family. Her funeral was a private graveside service in Montauk NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eastchester Police or Fire Department in Eleanor's name.
