Betsy Ann Dienes Obituary
Dienes, Betsy Ann,

known as "Mama Hosta" passed away on August 21, 2017, at the age of 82.

She is survived by her sisters, Patricia (Ramsey) and Phyllis (Chet Watson); daughter, Leah (Denise); dear friend and gardening partner, George Sales; canine companion, Arabella; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Ed, her husband of 50 years, and her brother, Leslie.

Born in Bailey Switch, KY, she graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a BA in Art and received her Masters in Library Science from Spaulding University. After settling in Louisville, she worked 25 years for the Louisville Free Public Library. Though her expertise was Fine Arts (the 700s) she quickly rose to head the Highland Branch (from which she retired). While there she pioneered the home bound library services program that was adopted system-wide.

An avid fiber artist, she was a quilter and seamstress who, as a founding member of the Louisville Artisans Guild, won numerous awards including Best of Show. Her work was also shown in the 8-State Craft Show at the Speed Museum.

She and her late husband Ed were ardent hosta gardeners and long-time members of the Hostas of Kentuckiana, winning many ribbons including King and Queen at their yearly cut-leaf show. They both loved to share their garden with others.

A celebration of Betsy's life will be Sunday, September 10, from 2-4pm with an open garden tour at 2228 Bonnycastle Ave.

Memorial donations can be made to the Kentucky Humane Society or Hosparus.
