Catherine I. "Katie" Shea Obituary
Shea, Catherine I. "Katie",

93, of Louisville passed on September 7, 2017.

A woman of significant intellect and education, Katie had many career options. But she chose to make her 6 children the centerpiece of her life. She instilled her playful nature and love of the outdoors in all her children. She was never hesitant to get on the ground for horseplay or jump into the pool to swim with them. Her laugh was distinctive, as were her renditions of her "Top 40."

Katie also led a life of volunteerism and philanthropy. She was a member of the Kosair Charities' W. Barnett Owen Society and gave to many other causes. She was a longtime supporter of the Catholic Church, where she participated as a Eucharistic minister.

Always a story teller, Katie was a former feature writer for the Courier-Journal Scene Magazine and Reader's Digest. She wrote many children's stories and poems, using her gift to captivate children with a personality that came alive through her words.

Katie also had a longtime love affair with animals and was a devoted volunteer at the Louisville Zoo. In her younger years, she was an accomplished equestrian who often rode the trails of Southern Parkway and Iroquois Park. She participated in the first all-female jockey race at Churchill Downs.

She was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School and Ursuline College, and attended graduate school at Catholic University. Over the years, Katie took many courses as her thirst for knowledge never wavered.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, William and Essell (Hoffman) Goose; and her brother, Carl Goose. Katie is survived by two daughters, Patti Naiser (Nick) and Molly Rauh (Steve); and four sons, Mike, Jack (Lisa), Tim (Robin) and Brien (Ali). She is also survived by sister, Donna Goose Warren, 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at St. Martha Church, 2825 Klondike Ln, Louisville, KY 40218 on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. with a private burial to follow in Saint Louis Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40218 on Sunday, September 10 from 2-7 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Kosair Charities. Online condolences may be left at www.ratterman.com
