Clayton, James "John D.",

James O, "John D." Clayton died peacefully on July 12, 2017 at the age of 87. A native of Princeton, Ky. John graduated from Butler High School in 1947 and attended Western State College. From 1952-1953, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Korean War and received the Bronze Star. John then graduated with degrees in art and music from University of Kentucky in 1954. After teaching art and music in the Franklin County schools , John went on to sell insurance and real estate before settling into the textbook publishing business for 34 years.

John remained actively involved in music up to his death. He played trombone with the Lexington Symphony Orchestra as well as many musical ensembles. He was director of Frankfort Community Chorus, Shelby County Bicentennial Chorus , Franklin County High School Acapella Choir, Frankfort Drum and Bugle Corps, Frankfort First Presbyterian Church, Shelbyville First Presbyterian Church and Full Circle Singers.

John was an accomplished painter, winning the Purchase Prize at the Kentucky State Fair in 2007 and 2012, Best in Show for the Louisville Women's Club exhibit , first place in a Kentucky-Indiana Pastel Society show, first place in a Mammoth Cave Regional Art Show, and second place in the VA's National Combat Veteran's competition. As a supporter of community art, John was president of the Kentucky -Indiana Pastel Society, co-founder of Shelby Artists on Main, and was one of the founders of Paul Sawyier Galleries.

Involvement in civic organizations included: President of Frankfort Jaycees, state vice president, national director and member of Rotary Club in multiple cities, President Kentucky Educational Publishers, member of Shelby County UK Alumni Club, and two terms on the University of Kentucky National Alumni Board.

As a Presbyterian throughout his adult life, John was a member of the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church and on session of the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Frances Bridges Clayton, brother, Robert Lee Clayton and grandson Will Clayton. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Steere Clayton, brother Charles "Buddy" Clayton, son John B. Clayton, stepdaughters Angela Kirkland and Jennifer Kirkland Starkey, one grandchild and four step grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 12th at the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville, Ky. with visitation at 12 PM and service at 1PM. Reception to follow at Kate's at 934 Main St. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville, Ky.
