James Porter Flowers Obituary
93, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 after a short illness at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.
He was formerly from Upton, KY, but most recently resided in Louisville.
A gentle man whose long life touched and lifted so many has passed into God's hands. James always said to his students, "Be a scholar and a gentleman."
A teacher most of his life, he taught in Burkesville, Hodgenville, and Louisville. His last 29 years of teaching were with the Jefferson County Public Schools where he taught in the mathematics department and served as a guidance counselor at Southern High School. He was a former member of Cooper Memorial United Methodist Church in Louisville for 30 years and a current member of Hodgenville United Methodist Church for 32 years where he taught Sunday School for 25 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Dalton and Lucy King Flowers, a sister, Reeble Anderson and a brother, Kenneth Flowers.
He is survived by his precious wife of 71 years, Jean Shelley Flowers, two daughters, Marilyn (Rogers) Flowers Queen of Louisville and Debbie (Leon) Flowers Drennan of Brentwood, Tennessee. He is also survived by two sisters, Elsie Tuggle of Harrodsburg and Stella (Dumont) Souleyrette of Upton, and two brothers, Keith (Sarah) Flowers of Richmond and Dr. Randel (Kathy) Flowers of Burkesville. His pride and joy were his six grandchildren, Chad (Kim) Queen, Amy (John) Queen Graybeal, Scott (Paige) Drennan, Amanda (Adam) Queen Burks, Allyson (Luke) Drennan Sexton, and Kelsey Drennan and his nine great-grandchildren, Abi Queen, Alyssa Queen, Grayson Graybeal, Preston Graybeal, Bailey Burks, Eli Burks, Hampton Graybeal, Francie Kate Drennan and Amelia Burks; two step-grandchildren, Tyler and Hayley Hobbs; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at noon, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218 with Dr. David Thomas, Rev. Karen Thomas and Rev. Bob Howell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be 4–6 p.m. Friday at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home, 208 West Water St, Hodgenville, KY 42748 and after 9:30 AM Saturday at the Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home until time for services.
