James Robert Calvert Obituary
Calvert, James Robert,

89, of Louisville and Elizabethtown, KY passed away Friday, September 29th, 2017 peacefully in his sleep following a stroke. He lived most of his life in Louisville, but was born April 2nd, 1928 in Avalon, PA to Delmer James and Freda Hornung Calvert. He had two brothers, Lee Roy and Donald Joseph Calvert, Sr., and a sister, Delma Louise Schnellenberger. He was very proud to have graduated from Manual High School (class of 1945) and loved attending monthly luncheons with his classmates until his passing. He was also very proud to have graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. in Economics; he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity there. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years and then in the Merchant Marine for 5 years; he was commended for heroism in helping to put out an enormous fire on his oil tanker in a multi-fatality collision with another tanker on a bitterly cold winter night in the Delaware Bay. He served for 55 years in the door and hardware industry at Monarch Panic Devices in Shepherdsville, the George B. Henne Hinge Company in Philadelphia, and LCN Closers in Princeton, IL before starting his own business in Louisville as a manufacturer's representative for J. Robert Calvert, Inc (later Calvert*Hoffman Representatives) along with Mrs. Bette Allgeier, Herb Hoffman (deceased), Keith Crume, and his son, Joe, who continues in the hardware business as a hardware specification writer. The company was acquired by CMH Associates where Bob worked until his "early retirement at the age of 79 and a half". He lived his last few years very fully at Atria Senior Living in Elizabethtown. Up until his passing he sang baritone bass with the Louisville singing group Voices of Joy.

He will be missed by his wife, Jean Bohannon Riedel Calvert (Radcliff), whom he married on Christmas Day of 1957. He will also be missed by his daughter, Susan Savannah (Calvert) Wade (Lexington) and her husband William Merritt Wade, Sr., daughter Dee Ann Calvert (Louisville), and son Joseph Delmer Calvert (Vine Grove) and his wife Berta Alicia Calvert. He is survived by two grandchildren: William Merritt Wade, Jr. (Bellevue, WA) and Dr. Heather Dawn Calvert MD (Billings, MT).

Visitation in Louisville will be from 9:00-11:00am on Saturday, October 28th at Immanuel Church of Christ at 2300 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40205, followed by a memorial service and lunch.
