Brand, Joseph Margon (Maj. USAF-Retired),

Passed away October 3, 2017. He was born in Louisville, KY on Sep. 1, 1926 to Rose Zirnheld Brand and Fred Brand (both deceased). He was also preceded in death by his brother Fred Brand, Jr. and sister Adele Heimann.

Joe graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1944 and was chosen by the Navy V-12 program to attend Duke University where he was on the basketball team. When WWII ended he returned to Louisville and attended the University of Louisville and is an adopted alumni. He later entered the Air Force and was stationed at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City where he met and married Colleen Myers. They were married 65 and a half years.

They enjoyed their time and travels in the Air Force until he retired in 1969 and returned to Louisville where he had a second career as a bank manager with National City Bank.

He belonged to St. Agnes Church and served as a sacristan for several years.

He was very active in the Lions Club and served on the boards of the St. Matthews Club, the School for the Blind Trust Fund, and the Hollaran Trust Fund. He was also on the board of VIPS (Visually Impaired Pre-School). He particularly enjoyed the years he worked the KentuckyIndiana High School All-Star game which benefits the Lions Eye Foundation. He received the Melvin Jones Award for his work with the blind.

After retirement he and Colleen loved to travel and follow UofL sports. They eventually saw all 50 states and most of Europe.

When not traveling he enjoyed playing tennis and pinochle with long-time St. X friends. He also belonged to the Sportsmen's Supper Club and served as treasurer.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen, his children Jane Fitts, Timothy (Karen), and Rachel. Grandchildren Tarah Freant (Scott), Eric and Madeline Fitts, and Rose Barone (Kirk). Stepgrandchildren Steve Morgan (Andrea) and Laura Thurman (George). Three great-grandchildren Zane, Reid, and Alice Freant. Three step-great-grandchildren Dylan, Morgan, and Ashley. He especially cared for his many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be held 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road.
