Thornton, Raymond C. "Ray",

age 94, of Louisville, KY passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Episcopal Church Home.

He was born November 1, 1923 to William Henry and Theresa (Schmitt) Thornton. He served in the Navy during WWII from Jan. 22, 1943 to Feb. 27, 1946 as a motor machinist mate first class. He received 4 medals: the Victory Medal, American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific and Good Conduct. He received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He was a member of ASHRAE Region VII for 50 years which he chaired for 4 and received an award plaque. He established KYANA Wood Crafters Club with 200 members and had been an officer for 27 years from its inception. He retired from General Electric in 1986 after 31 years.

Ray will be remembered by St. Gabriel Catholic Church parish as one of the first members and especially for his Wednesday Crew which he led for more than 30 years. This group built and repaired whatever the church or school required. He married the love of his life (Rosemary Joan Lampert) on December 27, 1947.

He is predeceased by his wife, son Steven Ray Thornton, granddaughter Kaylee Danielle Woods, his brothers, William, Edward and Emil and sister Mary Mildred Fralick. Left to honor Ray and remember his love are 8 of his children: Charles (Kathryn) Thornton, Dick (Jane) Thornton, Mary (Ken) Kolling, Pat (Mary Jane) Thornton, Beth (Terry) Conn, Jeanne (Steve) Casper, Peg (Billy) Whelan, Marla (Tom) Woods, 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, his sister Rose Marie (Milton) Walker, and his daughter-in-law, Nancy Thornton.

His funeral Mass will will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 5505 Bardstown Road, with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road.
