Sarah Heyburn Gallatin

Louisville - Sarah Heyburn Gallatin, a long-time resident of Manhattan, died on May 6, 2018 at the age of 93 in Arlington, VA where she had been attended to by the caring staff of The Jefferson nursing home and cared for by her son, Jim Gallatin, a resident of Arlington, VA.

Born Sarah Gilpin Heyburn into a family of prominent lawyers and businessmen in Louisville, Kentucky, "Sally" went north to attend the Ethel Walker School and Vassar College. After graduation she taught at the Bethlehem Day Nursery in Manhattan. In 1948, she married James Peter Gallatin, of New York, a banker and descendant of Albert Gallatin, the Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Jefferson and Madison.

In addition to raising three children, Sally was active in her community, supporting The House of the Redeemer on the upper east side. A passionate gardener, she was also actively involved in the maintenance of the Biblical Garden at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. For several decades, she proudly maintained a home and gardens on Long Island in Lloyd Harbor. Sally was a member of the Colony Club, the Piping Rock Club, and The National Society of Colonial Dames of the State of New York. She is survived by her three children, Jim, (James Peter Gallatin, Jr.), Andrew (Andrew Heyburn Gallatin), and Mary (Mrs. Clay Edward Stobaugh) and her grandson (James Peter Gallatin, III). Her husband James died in 1993.

Sally's ashes were scattered according to her wishes after a private ceremony outside of Washington, DC. Memorial donations may be made to the Biblical Garden at the Cathedral of Saint John The Divine on the upper west side of Manhattan.
