Dr. Norton Garlove Waterman Obituary
Waterman, Dr. Norton Garlove,

89, passed away at his home on October 6, 2017.

Norton was born on September 7, 1928, in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Sophia Garlove Waterman and Joseph Meyer Waterman. He was raised in Greenwood, Mississippi, and attended high school in Jackson, Mississippi. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree and, after serving in the US Army Chemical Corps, his master's in microbiology, both from The University of Tennessee. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1955 and completed a five-year residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis in 1960. He established a private practice in surgery the same year in Louisville, where he practiced for the entirety of a long and distinguished career. He served his community and his profession in many roles, among them Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Louisville Medical School, President of the Medical Staff of Jewish Hospital, President of the Louisville Surgical Society, and president of the Jefferson County Medical Society. In the latter role, he founded the humanitarian organization Supplies Over Seas (SOS), which collects and ships surplus medical supplies and equipment to developing and impoverished countries in Eastern Europe, Central America, and Africa. What began as a one-person endeavor with a donated closet space has since become one of only fifteen medical surplus recovery organizations in the nation with a paid staff of six, hundreds of local volunteers and regional partners, and which has collected and distributed over 1.5 million pounds of medical supplies to over thirty countries.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his brothers David (Marilyn) and Irwin (Patricia). He is survived by his wife, Judith Lane Waterman, his sons Daniel (Jeanette) and Joseph Waterman, and grandchildren Elijah, David, and Anna.

Visitation will be from 3 pm to 5pm on Monday, October 9, at The Temple, 5101 US Highway 42, in Louisville. Memorial service will follow.

Contributions in memory of Norton may be made to Supplies Over Seas, 1500 Arlington Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206 or 21st Century Parks, 471 West Main Street, Ste, 202, Louisville, KY 40202.
