Shirley J. Shelton Obituary
Shelton, Shirley J.,

Shirley J. Shelton, 85 passed away on Jan. 17, 2018. She was born in Louisville

on July 23, 1932 to Caryle and Mae Shelton. She spent most of her life in Louisville as a professional educator, serving as an elementary classroom teacher, a teacher supervisor and an elementary school principal. Her final assignment in the Louisville school system was to open and serve as principal of the first Traditional elementary school in the city. She was associated with Delta Kappa Gamma for over 40 years. She is fondly remembered by her teaching colleagues and thousands of school system students whom she served. After, retirement, Shirley was a member of the Women's Club of Louisville, where she served as volunteer coordinator for the gift shop of Kosair Children's Hospital.

In 1975, Shirley met Norma Burgess with whom she worked at Haywood Elementary School. They became close friends and after several years decided to share a home together. Together they were an excellent team whose skills complemented one another, and they were very devoted to each other. In July 2012, Norma passed away after and extended illness.

After Norma's death Shirley's medical condition deteriorated significantly and she decided it would be best for her not to live alone. Her cousins, Don and Florence Shelton, suggested she move to Bloomington, IN to be close to them and their family. In August 2012 Shirley moved to Bell Trace Senior Living Center in Bloomington. While living there Shirley attended many musical and theater events at Indiana University and other Bloomington venues. She became an active member of First United Church where she often served as scripture reader.

One of the things Shirley enjoyed most about living in Bloomington was family activities with Don and Florence's family--their son Chris Shelton and his wife Susie, and their daughters Emma and Lizzie, and Don and Florence's daughter, Angie Shelton and her daughter Caley. Shirley will be missed greatly by her family, her friends in Bloomington and Louisville, and her former colleagues in the Louisville School System and many of the children she taught.

Funeral service 12:30 PM Saturday, Nunnelley Funeral Home, 4327 Taylor Blvd., with burial at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 AM Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to First United Church, 2420 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401.
