James Snodgrass Obituary
James Snodgrass (Jim), an acclaimed artist, died on July 19, 2013 in Louisville.
Born in Jeffersonville, IN, he took his BFA at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis.
Jim maintained studios in Indianapolis, Louisville, and Corydon with a brief stint in New York City during his life.
He exhibited with seminal American artists, among them Richard Diebenkorn, Ben Shahn, Hans Hofmann and Sam Francis.
A perennial prizewinner for sculpture and painting in juried exhibitions, Jim also had many one-man shows for both mediums.
Jim did portraits, figurative work, murals, abstracts and conservation for collectors and museums, notably the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
He painted every day until the week of his death, saying, "If I would be in any other time and space, I would be doing the same thing. . . Painters are of all periods. There is a kinship with the guys that went before me." Jim is survived by his daughter Lisa and son Nicholas, as well as Lisa's children and grandchildren. He remains loved by many friends, for his work, friendship and his beautiful spirit.
There will not be a public service.

But he just called about two months ago - what happened? Jim was a good friend back in the Herron and Brown House days (early 50s. It was eerie how his voice and inflection were the same as 60 years ago. I miss him already.

So sorry ot hear of the passing of Jim. I knew him thru his relationship with my husband, Chris Rapp, at Chris Rapp Frames and Yvonne Rapp, at Yvonne Rapp Gallery. They both thought highly of him and his contribution to the art community.
We extend my deepest condolences to his family, and friends.
