CAMPBELL, MELVIN T. SR., departed this life on January 21, 2014 after a brief illness.

Melvin was born in Hickman County, TN on February 16, 1929 to Willis Thompson and Callie Johnson. He attended College Hill High School in Columbia, TN before enlisting in the United States Army in June 1946. After 27 years of active military service, he retired in the rank and grade of First Sergeant, E-8. Melvin served many tours of duty during his military career including service in France, Germany, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous military accolades including a Bronze Star.

After his distinguished military service, Melvin pursued higher education and in 1977 graduated from the University of Louisville with a Baccalaureate Degree in Commerce. In 1979 he accepted a position as a Field Auditor for the State of Kentucky until his retirement in 1994.

Melvin T. Campbell Sr., had an extensive history as a Freemason. He was a member and past Master of Unity Lodge No. 12, F. & A. M. P.H.A., where he served faithfully until his passing. He served as Grand Lecturer, Honorary Past Grand Master and Past Commander in Chief of Louisville Consistory No. 41 A.A.S.R. P.H.A.. Melvin was a 33rd degree Mason and a member of The United Supreme Council Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Prince Hall Affiliation, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A. and as S.G.I.G., he once served as Deputy of the Orient of Kentucky.

Amongst many, Melvin leaves his loving immediate family to mourn his passing, wife, Margaret Wilson Campbell of Louisville; son, Melvin T. Campbell Jr. (Emily); granddaughter, Alessandra Campbell; grandson, Carrington Campbell, all of Ft. Washington, MD; nephew, Gilford Harris (Roxie) of Atlanta, GA; grandnieces, Deborah Sowell of Bloomington , MN; Leslie (Larry) Harris O'Hanlon of Albuquerque, NM and Callie Harris of Atlanta, GA. Melvin's extended family include, former wife, Berta Campbell-Wicht of Munich, Germany; stepdaughters, Gerty (Campbell) Lambert of Mt. Airy, MD, Brenda F. Duke, Margaret Vestal, both of Columbia, TN, Forsythia Dudley of Nashville, TN, Carla Burns of Las Vegas, NV, Pamela Brooks of Nashville, TN; stepsons, Jeffrey (Rose) Wilson, Charles Wilson both of Columbia, TN, James (Tracy) Wilson of Antioch, TN, Deon Wilson of Las Vegas, NV; cousin, Delphine Johnson and many stepgrandchildren.

Visitation: Thursday, 6-9 p.m. Calvary Baptist Church, 1368 S. 28th St. Hathaway & Clark Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of local arrangements. Service: Saturday, February 1, 2014. Visitation: 11 a.m. followed by service at 1 p.m. (Central Time) at Carmack Blvd. Church of Christ, 2111 Carmack Blvd., Columbia, TN 38401. Burial: Rose Mount Cemetery, Columbia TN. V.K.
