Inventor, Naval Officer
CONCORD, MA Hans E. Band, 84, died Wednesday, Mar. 4, in Concord, MA after a long illness.
He was born in Vienna, Austria on October 14, 1924. He graduated from Harvard University, Class of 1946, and earned his master's degree in physics at Boston University in 1953.
Mr. Band arrived in the United States just prior to the outbreak of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army. He loved his adopted country. Subsequently, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired as a Commander after 28 years of service.
He was an engineer, scientist and inventor, and received several patents, including one for his pioneering work in the development in carbon-fiber composites. As a scholar, he published numerous articles in scientific journals. In retirement, he tutored mathematics at Middlesex Community College in Bedford.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth C. (Harford) Band of Bedford, MA; three sons, Richard of Londonderry, NH, Charles of New Ipswich, NH, and Peter of Hollis, NH; four granddaughters, Clarissa Moll of Glendale Heights, IL, Georgina Henker of Dover, NH, Priscilla Hofmann of Medford, MA, and Sarah Field of Alexandria, VA; and three great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Carlisle (MA) Congregational Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, classical music and time with his family.
BAND Hans E. of Bedford, March 2. Visiting hours will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 The Great Rd., Bedford, Mass. on Friday, March 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
A graveside service will be held at Shawsheen Cemetery, corner of Shawsheen Rd. and The Great Rd., Bedford, Mass. on Saturday, March 7, at 10:30 A.M. and followed by a memorial service at Carlisle Congregational Church, 147 School St., Carlisle, Mass. at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carlisle Congregational Church, P.O. Box 191, Carlisle, MA 01741.
