Marie L. Smith

1936 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Marie L. Smith
of Chelmsford, MA

CHELMSFORD - Marie L. (McHale) Smith of Chelmsford died Friday afternoon, June 8, 2018, at home while surrounded by her children. She was born on January 14, 1936, to William and Mary (Martin) McHale, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Later in life, she graduated from Middlesex Community College with an associates degree in Paralegal Studies.

She was predeceased by her brothers, William and Joseph McHale. She is survived by her husband, Arthur J. Smith, Jr. (U.S. Army ret.) of Chelmsford. She is also survived by her three children: Regina Smith of Chelmsford; Arthur J. Smith, III of Worcester; and William S. Smith of Holden and his wife, Alison, as well as many nieces, nephews and relatives in Ireland. Marie is also survived by her four beloved grandchildren, Caroline Smith, Abigail Smith, Patrick Smith and Brady Smith.

Marie was a dual citizen of the United States of America and the Republic of Ireland- her beloved land where her grandparents and ancestors before them lived. She was a Bostonian to her core. Marie came of age in Jamaica Plain then met her husband, Arthur, in the years after his return from the Korean War. When a secretary in Boston, she once met John F. Kennedy while he was campaigning for the presidency. Red Sox legend, Ted Williams, was a friend of Marie's in her 20's. She worked in numerous positions as an executive assistant and technological administrator. Marie passionately loved the Red Sox, the Patriots and the Celtics. She also enjoyed the music of U2 and Bruce Springsteen and traveling with her daughter. She adored her grandchildren; upon whom she left an indelible mark.

She loved America as she did Ireland, the land of her ancestors. Those ancestors were from the Knock area, County Mayo, Ireland, and included her grandparents, Patrick and Delia Martin, who emigrated to America in the late 19th century.

Marie loved this song by Seamus Robinson:

"Take me home to Mayo

across the Irish Sea.

Home again in Mayo

where once I roamed so free.

Take me home to Mayo

and let my body lie.

Home at last in Mayo

beneath an Irish sky..."

Marie is now again home, at last, in Mayo.

Beneath an Irish sky.
