He was born in Assam, India, on Jan. 1, 1940, a son of the late Ratneswar and Surana (Barua) Barthakur. He received his early education in India. At 18, he moved to the United States, where he received a graduate degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
In 1969, Mr. Barthakur began working at Wang and served as its director of quality assurance for 20 years. Prior to his illness, he was president of Datamatics America Inc. Mr. Barthakur also served on the board of directors of Saztec International Inc.
He was an avid sportsman who especially enjoyed annual trips to the Kentucky Derby.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Dilip and his wife Padma Barthakur of Jakarta, Indonesia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Niru and her husband Profulla Khaund of Winchester, and Chandra and her husband Mridul Barua of Toronto; two nephews, Depok and Rollin Khaund; a niece, Nina McGeehan and her husband John; and his grandnieces and grandnephews, Paul McGeehan, Mirand and Rustom Barua, and Seema and Bikrom Barthakur.

I was a close friend of Pradeep when we were graduate students in mathematics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, in 1963/64.
We lost touch after I returned to Australia. I often wondered how his career had progressed.
