Lieutenant Colonel Sean
Michael Judge, PhD
formerly of Methuen, MA; 40

DUBLIN, OHIO -- Lieutenant Colonel Sean Michael Judge, PhD, age 40, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012 @ Dublin Methodist Hospital.

Sean was born in Methuen, Massachusetts on September 28, 1971. His parents are Daniel and Cathy Judge of Dracut, MA and Mary and David Conant of Beverly Hills, FL. Sean has two sisters, Brehan and her husband Michael McCarthy of Andover, MA and Dannah and her husband Paul Foresta of Dracut, MA. He also has 4 step-siblings whom he thought of as siblings -- Becky Fitzgibbons, Kevin Conant, Ed Conant and Ronald Conant. He is also survived by his grandparents, James and Rita Judge of Lawrence, MA.

From the time Sean was a little boy, he wanted to be a pilot in the Air Force. When he was six years old he told his mother he needed an Intellivision (the newest video game technology at that time) to improve his eye-hand coordination. It worked -- he got it for Christmas that year!
When Sean was ready for high school, he transferred to all boy Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA which had a reputation for a large number of graduates getting accepted at military academies. Sean received early acceptance from the Air Force Academy and was nominated by Senator Robert Smith from New Hampshire. He graduated very high in his Academy class and secured a slot for pilot training.

He went to pilot training in Mississippi and chose to be a C-130 pilot upon graduation. He went on to serve in the Air Force for over 19 years and flew in Operation Enduring Freedom and Bosnia as well as other deployments. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force at the time of his death.

Sean was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. In 2011, he completed his PhD in Military History from The Ohio State University.

Sean's first assignment after pilot training was at Pope Air Force in Fayetteville, NC. He visited a friend from high school at UNC-Chapel Hill and met Carmen Smith of Charlotte, NC. They dated for a little over a year and were married June 28, 1997. They have 3 children, Ryan age 10, Seth age 8 and Amelia who just turned 7 last week.

Sean was a wonderful husband and father and was very devoted to his family. His children were the light of his life. He has served as a soccer coach and Boy Scout Leader. He lived his life with loyalty, honor and dignity. He was much loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all.

JUDGE -- A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the Northwest Presbyterian Church, 6400 Post Rd., Dublin, OH, 43016. Interment Arlington National Cemetery in the fall of 2012. Arrangements being completed at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, 2693 W. Broad St.

Family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Fisher House, 417 Schlatter Ave., Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH, 45433.

Sean, you are loved and missed more than you could ever imagine. I know you sometimes said that I loved you too much but that is not possible. However, I still love you with all my heart and soul and it's difficult every day to live in this world without you. Your funny antics, your wisdom, your laughter and just everything about you. I never thought I'd have to live one day on earth without you. You gave me reason to live and then when you started a family of your own that made everything even better. Your children have grown into young adults. They are very loving, well mannered and each of them has some part of you which makes me so happy. I only wish you could be here to see and help them grow. You would be so proud of them. You are always the first person on my mind when I wake up and the last person on my mind before I fall to sleep and so many minutes in between. Love & Hugs, Mom

Sean, Words cannot fully express how much you are missed, not only by me, but by so many other family members, friends and colleagues. You had a profound affect on all who knew and loved you. My heart aches each day knowing that you are missing out on seeing your children grow and develop into the fine people they are becoming and that you are just missing out on life and all that's going on. You worked so diligently to create a wonderful life only for it to be ripped out from under you. You were the best son a mother could hope for and I will love you with all my heart and soul until my dying day. Love & Hugs, Mom

Sean, you are always on my mind and in my heart. You are the first person in my mind in the morning and the last person in my mind in the evening. For those interested in Sean's work as a historian, the published version of his award-winning School of Advanced Air and Space Studies thesis, "Who Has the Puck? Strategic Initiative in Modern, Conventional War" can be downloaded in .pdf form from from the Air University Press website, http://aupress.maxwell.af.mil/bookinfo.asp?bid=167&type=papers. This theis is well worth the read both in its own right and as the precursor to Sean's first-class Ohio State University dissertation, "The Turn of the Tide," an in-dpeth examination of shifting strategic initiative in the South and Southwest Pacific Theaters during World War II.

Sean was an accomplished Airman, a gifted scholar, a devoted family man, and a magnificent human being. It was my great honor to be his thesis advisor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, where his theis on straegic initiative in World War II won the Air Force Historical Association Award for the best SAASS history thesis of 2008. At The Ohio State University, he expanded that thesis into a publishable dissertation. He was due to join our faculty in the summer of 2013. My colleagues and I shall miss him deeply, and we shall never forget him.

Sean. You were an outstanding Air Force officer, a brillant scholar, and a terrific upbeat, always positive person. We shall miss you very much. Whenever you were in a class I took, I knew your presence would always turn the class Into a classic, upbeat, and rewarding learning experience. But I know that your new PCS assignment requires your singular talents. God Speed. James R. Miles, Colonel, USAF (Retired)

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to LTC Sean Michael Judge our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Sean. And to Sean it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the service he rendered to his country during Bosnia and Operation Enduring Freedom while serving as a C-130 pilot in the U.S. Air Force. No greater love and patriotism is shown than a man lay down his life in service to his country. Sean, you are a loyal Air Force Warrior and a true Patriot. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Sean's family and loved ones.
