Charles "Jerry" Barone M.D. Obituary
Charles "Jerry" Barone, M.D. Charles Gerald Barone died August 23, 2011 in Grand Ledge, Michigan at the age of 91. He was born May 28, 1920, in Highland Park, Michigan. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1938 and entered the University of Michigan in 1938. He was admitted to an accelerated degree program sponsored by the U.S. Army at the university's School of Literature, Science and the Arts and its Medical School and received his M.D. degree in July 1944. He served in the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado, during World War II and afterwards at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was called back into the Army during the Korean war and served in Korea from January to September 1953. Jerry Barone was married to Alice Katherine Darcy on June 26, 1943, and at the time of his death they had been married for 68 years. Aside from his years in military service, they lived in Michigan, in Highland Park, Detroit, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills and Grand Ledge. They had three children, Michael Barone, of Washington, D.C., Marilyn Barone Wagamon and Patricia Barone, both of Lansing. Dr. Barone was on the staff of Highland Park General Hospital from 1947 until it closed in 1976, and he also served on the staffs at Mount Sinai Hospital, Crittenden Hospital and St. John's Hospital. He was a general surgeon and served as an on-call emergency room physician for many years and kept office hours at his offices in northwest Detroit and Birmingham. While many of his colleagues retired, he worked as a utilization review physician at South Macomb Hospital, Warren, Michigan, from 1986 until his retirement in 1998. He loved the practice and challenges of surgery and he was known for his personal attention and unfailing sense of humor by hundreds of physicians and nurses and thousands of patients over more than 50 years. He is survived by his three children and by his son-in-law, Thomas Wagamon, who has been married to his daughter Marilyn for 43 years, and four grandchildren, Robert and Dylan Wagamon and Alice and Patrick Overland, and by five great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Jack, Reese, Hudsyn and Ellie Wagamon. Donations in the name of Dr. Barone may be made to the Salvation Army at https://secure20.salvationarmy.org/donation.jsp or to any charity of your choice.
