JoAnne Ghorai

Lansing - JoAnne Ghorai, formerly of Lansing, MI, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2018 at the age of 80. She was surrounded by family in Oakland, CA, where she settled after retirement. JoAnne was a teacher for the Lansing School District for over 30 years, having taught at Walter French Junior High School, Pattengill Junior High School, Eastern High School, and J.W. Sexton High School. At Sexton, she was Chair of the History Department for many years. JoAnne taught social studies, Advanced Placement US and European History, government, and economics. Her passion for history and the English language underscored her high standards for student performance and growth. JoAnne was an unabashed liberal and intellectual whose favorite quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..."

JoAnne is survived by her son Alexis Ghorai, wife Wendy, and their children Olivia and Julia of Oakland, CA; daughter Andrea Ghorai of San Francisco, CA; and son Todd Krishna Ghorai and wife Kimberly of Alma, CO.
