Richard "Dick" H. Showalter
Grand Ledge - Richard H. Showalter passed away peacefully on Jan.7, 2021 at the age of 98. Born Jan. 2, 1923 to Wilbur and Helen (Guild) Showalter, the daughter of a Methodist minister, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Margaret (Bunny) Showalter, brother Robert and sister Helen. Survived by children Richard (Susan), Joseph (Judy), Sally (Paul) and Peter (Christine), sister Margaret, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Dick served as a medical corpsman in the Navy for 3 ½ years during WW II. He graduated from DePauw University and spent 32 years as an executive with the Boy Scouts of America. Upon retiring, he became a realtor in Grand Ledge for another 22 years. During his working years, Dick treasured family road trips throughout the United States.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, sailing and camping and was a proud member of the Grand Ledge Lions Club, earning its most prestigious award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship (2014), and was an active member of the Grand Ledge Methodist Church. He delivered Meals on Wheels into his nineties.
Dick had many friends and was loved dearly by his family. He was known for his kindness to all, friends and strangers alike. Always ready with a quip or friendly greeting, he will be sorely missed.
The family thanks everyone at Independence Village of East Lansing for a warm and supportive home the last two years.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Grand Ledge Methodist Church or the Grand Ledge Lions Club. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at
