William Falls Obituary

William M. "Bill" Falls

Bath - On Tuesday February 23rd, 2021, Dr. William M. Falls "Bill" passed away at the age of 72. Bill was at his home in Bath, MI, surrounded by his loving wife, family and friends during his final days.

Bill was born in Muncie, Indiana, on May 13, 1948, the child of William and Roberta "Tootie" Falls. He was the eldest of their two sons, Richard "Dick" Falls his younger brother was his best friend and they shared a childhood filled with laughter and memories that will forever be cherished.

Bill was a 1966 graduate of Burris Laboratory School, a K-12 school associated with Ball State University. He received a scholarship to attend Hanover College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 and was awarded a graduate assistantship at The Ohio State University. He received a Master of Science Degree in 1973 and received his Ph.D. in Neuroanatomy from Ohio State on June 13, 1975. Bill continued his studies from 1975-1979 with postdoctoral research training at the National Institute of Health, studying in the areas of neurobiology, neurocytology, neuroanatomy, and electron microscopy.

After Bill completed his studies in Washington D.C., he accepted a position at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. Bill was the definition of a true Spartan and making the move to this University was a decision he was proud of. He found a career and place to call home where he could pursue his passion for helping others learn and he succeeded. He worked for the Department of Anatomy as an Assistant Professor from 1979-1984 and as an Associate Professor from 1984-1990. He was a Professor in the Department of Anatomy/Radiology from 1990-2018 as well as the Associate Dean of Student Services for the College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1998-2018 until he retired.

Over his 39 years as a faculty member/Associate Dean of the School of Osteopathic Medicine, his accomplishments did not go unrecognized. Bill was the first recipient of the Golden Apple award in 1988, receiving a total of 12 throughout his career. He was recognized 6 times as a recipient of the Hooding Award, honored 17 times for being the Outstanding Basic Science Faculty Teacher, and in 2018 he was given the prestigious Walter F. Patenge Metal of Public Service. Bill has always kept the students best interest at heart, and it never took long for them to recognize that he was committed to their success. Although he had the reputation as a tough instructor, he earned his student's admiration and inspired all of his students (well over 3,500) with his ideas, teaching, and mentorship.

Bill enjoyed life! In his free time, he loved watching and supporting MSU athletics, playing golf, lake time, traveling, gardening, volunteering his time with Miracle League, and supporting his family members on the side lines (with his wife Cathy) at their volleyball, softball, soccer, tennis, and other sport related activities. He loved being a dog dad to his two pugs Gracie and Jake "Willy" Falls.

Bill is survived by his wife Cathy Falls (Brady) and her children Christy (Mike) Price, Brandy Widner, and Brandon Brady; brother Richard Falls and his children Shelby Lasley and Rachel Falls; son Trever Carson; Grandchildren Ashlee (Zach) Bailey, Caitlyn Wells, Alex Widner, Emily Price, Gabby Price and Zach Price; Great grandchild Lyle Bailey. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Roberta, grandparents Fred and Fern McKenzie, and first wife Jan Falls (mother of Trever).

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Dr. William M. Falls Scholarship Fund where his name will be honored by contributing to the success of future MSU students. Go Green!

Dr. Falls, my mentor, my confidant, and my Friend! You are one of the reasons I made it through medical school. So many memories we shared together - my jaw and heart surgery, my many losses - but equally the blessings in my life. You became my family! I hope you know how deeply you were loved, and how much I appreciated you over the years. Words just can't express how much you will be missed by our family.
God brought you to me, I will see you again!
Cradle Barbara Rose for me and teach her a thing or two.

Dr Falls was a wonderful teacher and even more of an exquisite individual. He was always available for any student that needed academic help and was a trusted source for anyone that needed assistance with personal issues. His advice was always spot on and his word was gold.

He had a tough grading expectation (you were cooked if you scored less than 85% on any quiz or test) but he was such an effective instructor that everyone excelled beyond the minimal acceptable score.

He was a trusted advocate for the COM students while maintaining his position as an effectual member of the faculty.

It is with deep sadness that I heard of Dr. Falls passing and my heartfelt condolences to his family. I will always remember him fondly and with the utmost of respect and gratitude.

Dr Falls is a true gem of a man. He celebrated with us when we did well, comforted us when we didn’t, and always was here for us. He truly will be missed by everyone whose lives he has touched. He is a true scholar, advocate, mentor, and friend.

Dr Falls loved his students, MSUCOM and his family tremendously. He will be deeply missed for certain. I will always pray for him.

When I was a single mom, struggling through medical school, he encouraged me letting me know that his wife was a single mom when he met her. I will never forget his kindness.

Dr Falls managed to easily bridge the gap between student/faculty and administration. He was able to help many of us early in our careers as we dealt with the anxiety and stress of medical school. He always had a smile and was happy to discuss the latest Spartan sporting events or the best holes on the latest course he played. Bill really exuded a genuine compassion and caring for the students he served. He will be missed. My best thoughts and prayers to the Falls family and MSU-COM at this sad time.

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of this great man. Dr. Falls was a stellar academic and instructor, but was even more perfectly suited to the role of Dean of Student Services. His compassion, fairness, and steadfastness endeared him to the thousands of medical students he taught and mentored over the years. In training, one has the opportunity to work with dozens, if not hundreds, of highly-skilled and talented instructors and staff. Some you remember, some you recall with fondness, and some you revere. Bill Falls was all of these. He will be sorely missed.

When entering medical school , your anxiety is high. Meeting Bill on my first day and catching his wave of kindness, knowledge, and enthusiasm made my transition that much easier. Being taught by him, I couldn't help but fall in love with anatomy. He set the ground for my entire medical school career and beyond. Those who crossed his path in any way will miss him dearly, he was a true giant of a man, educator and friend. My condolences to all.

Dr. Falls was one of my first instructors when I started at MSUCOM in 1985. He set the bar high for us, and gave us the instruction and tools needed to succeed. Later in my career, he became a mentor and a colleague. I'll always be grateful to him for his commitment to the medical education programs at MSUCOM and his guidance as an educator and administrator. My sincere condolences to his family.

Bill was one of the most kind-hearted and caring people I ever had the privilege of meeting. His kindness extended beyond medical school as I would often see him at the MAC or the annual football tailgate. He would inquire about my career and how my son was doing; and would want to know about other people and bring me up to speed on the accomplishments of my fellow classmates; it was as if he was telling me about his own children, the pride he took in our accomplishments from Pediatricians and Family Practitioners to Orthopedic and Neurosurgeons, he knew what happened to everyone of you!
Today we lost not a good man, but a great man who served as a role model for us all.

Rest In Peace Dr. Falls.....!

One of my favorite memories of Dr. Falls was when he wore a brain cap, held a femur and chanted "I love anatomy" on stage while Paul Handleman, DO, played heavy metal rock during our Fee Follies in 1985. He was truly a good sport and thorough teacher.

Thanks for interviewing me during my medical school interview and putting in all of those good words that got me admitted into Michigan State! And, thanks for all of the incredible anatomy training...none of us will ever forget the first day of gross anatomy!!! Looking at all of those dissected bodies...we all realized our lives will never be the same and yes...we will become doctors! We will miss your gentle smile, and compassion....see you in Heaven my friend....until then and after....rest in peace!
