Henry "Hank" Jarabek


Henry "Hank" Jarabek, 91, of Charlotte, passed away on July 17, 2014, at Eaton Community Palliative Care. 

He was born on November 16, 1922, to Richard and Pauline (Kristinek) Jarabek in Cleveland, OH.  Henry was one of six children.  He always credited much of his success and his personality to the close relationship with his brothers and younger sister.  He attended Saginaw High School, graduating in 1941. Henry entered the U.S. Army Air Corp November 13, 1942, during WWII.    He was a remote control gunnery instructor on the B-29 Bomber.    After returning from the service, he married the love of his life Nancy Topham on August 23, 1947.  Henry attended Central Michigan University graduating with a degree in education in 1949. His first teaching position was in Northport, Michigan, in 1949.  In 1953, his family moved to Charlotte where Henry taught 7th grade Social Studies and 8th grade History. In 1962, he earned a Master's Degree in History from Michigan State University.  Henry retired in 1986 after 37 years of teaching.

Henry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served in the St. Mary's Men's Club.  He was also a long time member of the Charlotte Lions Club.  Henry and his family spent the summers in Lake Leelanau, Michigan, managing the Birch Beach Resort which he owned with his brothers. The family spent many summers since 1964 at their cottage on Lake Leelanau.  Henry was proud of his children and his community.  He served the City of Charlotte as a City Councilman, as well as numerous boards and commissions.  Henry was a current member of the Fitch Beach Airport Advisory Board.    

Henry is survived by his three sons, Jeffrey (Sarah) Jarabek of Cape Coral, FL; John Jarabek of Cape Coral, FL; Christopher (Kristin) Jarabek of West Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Susan Miller of Fort Wayne, IN; Beth (Dave) Jarabek-Moravek of Golden, CO; sister, Veronica Bressette of Midland, MI.  Henry was especially proud of his grandchildren Jamie (Brittany) Jarabek, Justin Miller, Juliette Jarabek, Dyer Jarabek, and Fabian Jarabek, great granddaughter Victoria, and step grandchildren Sean and Kelly Klingler.

He was preceded in death by father, Richard Jarabek, mother, Pauline Jarabek, brother, Thomas Jarabek, brother, Daniel Jarabek, brother, Bernie Jarabek, brother, Benjamin Jarabek, daughter Julie, and his wife Nancy.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014 3:00-5:00 p.m. & 7:00-9:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, Michigan.  Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, 11:00 am at the St. Mary's Catholic Church - Charlotte, Michigan, with Rev. Fr. David  Rosenberg, celebrating.  Burial will take place in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Eaton Community Palliative Care or St. Mary's Catholic Church of Charlotte.
