Maynard D. Cornell Obituary
Maynard D. Cornell Lansing Maynard, 83, passed away at home on February 16, 2013. Born in 1929 to Lloyd O. Cornell and Rachel E. (Gere) of Leslie. The loving husband of Ann M. (Utz) for 60 years. He loved his family. Maynard was a very strong man and hard worker. He worked on the railroad out of high school, then at Oldsmobile. He enlisted in the Army in 1949 to serve in the Korean War, returning home in 1952 to marry and raise a family. He retired as a pipefitter in 1978, after 31 years at Olds. Maynard spent 33 winters with Ann in Tucson, AZ, panning for gold, enjoying the company of many friends, playing bridge at the Armory Park Center and attending Amphi Bible Church. In 2012 he adopted his little dog, Maya, who was his faithful friend and companion. Maynard was a gardener, proud of his twin silver maple, his irises and his immaculately hand-weeded lawn. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make others laugh. Family and friends enjoyed his teriyaki pork cookouts, and he always made time to play with the children. Maynard was generous to those in need, a good neighbor. He actively served the Northtown Neighborhood Association and Friends of Bancroft Park for decades. Maynard had many dear friends at Lansing First United Brethren Church over the years. In recent months, Maynard enjoyed playing Wednesday bridge at Letts Community Center. Surviving are his wife, Ann. His son, Jeffrey, and his daughters, Jennifer, Melanie (Harvey) Bond and Cynthia. Grandson, Daniel Bond, and granddaughters, Meilani and Jamie Williams. Great grandchildren, QiAirra, Davon, Kamarri, Kameia and Corinne. Sisters, Lillian Ellsworth, Rosie Robins and Alice Hodges. Sisters-in-law, Ann Cornell, Doris Carter and Jean Burns. Brothers-in-law, Paul (Judie) Utz, Dean (Loretta) Utz, David Utz and Carlton (Gail) Utz. And many beloved nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death, as did his brothers, Lloyd Jr, Melvin, Nelson, David and Kenneth, and his sisters, Beulah Reese and Lorna Stuart. A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. Eden United Brethren Church, 1938 Eden Road, Mason, with lunch following. Donations may be made to Youth Haven Ranch, or P.O. Box 97, Rives Junction, MI 49277.
