Pio Mactal Vilar, Jr., MD, 81, of Summerlin, died on May 12, 2020, after successfully defeating COVID-19 but not its aftermath. He was the loving husband of Ruby L. Batan Vilar, MD, for 20 years, as well as the loving husband of Ester G. Vilar, MD, for 35 years before her death from multiple myeloma.

Pio was the beloved father of Carmela V. Wise and her husband, Richard, of Wayland, MA, and Philip Pio G. Vilar and his wife, Jennifer, of Whitefish, MT. He is also survived by his six grandchildren (whom he adored), Isabel Wise O'Gara and her husband Robert, Christopher (Corey) Wise, Catherine Wise, Henry Vilar, and Thomas Vilar, and three of his sisters, Mabini Castelo, Lydia Cruz, and Julieta Mactal.

Pio was born in the Philippines on August 24, 1938, the youngest of the eight children of Pio Sr. and Trinidad Vilar. He emigrated to the United States in 1963 as a medical resident, training in the DC, CT, and NYC areas before settling in St. Louis, MO. Pio practiced in St. Louis as a surgeon for 27 years before retiring to the Las Vegas area.

An active senior citizen, Pio enjoyed golf, bowling, photography, travel and medical missions. He and his wife Ruby were actively involved with several medical missions for many years, primarily focused on donating their medical expertise to underserved regions in their native Philippines. As a grandparent, Pio loved to golf, kayak, and crack jokes with his grandchildren. He loved nothing better than eating fresh seafood while surrounded by his family.

A memorial service celebrating Pio's life will be held at a later date when family and friends can safely gather together again. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pio's name can be sent to Feeding America (www.feedingamerica.org).

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Desert Memorial.

Services are pending.

Pio was a great Friend and I had the good fortune to play Golf together many times. We also bowled together a few times. He tried to teach me. He was very patient, as I was lousy. We laughed a lot and had FUN. Pio was a very charitable guy. We just loved he and a Ruby.

(Sorry for the delay. For some unknown technical error, our message sent on May 30 was lost and the RJ Obit asked me to try again.)

Our deepest heartfelt sympathy to Ruby, Carmela, Philip and family.
Pio was a happy, humble man who always smiled and made us laugh with his funny jokes. We will miss his smiles, laughs, warm hugs and fun times together (bowling). He may be gone from our sight but never our memories and hearts. We were blessed to have known him and be his friend. "Rest in Peace" dear friend...

ALOHA...Pio, Rest In Peace!
We will all miss you, especially your friendly smiles, jokes and bowling with you; fun memories.
The great 'Doc' Vilar was loved by all. He was a bowling member in the 'Senior Islanders' league for 18 years (2002-2020). He enjoyed bowling and was a mentor to many (he was a good bowler). He was always friendly and had a likable personality.
Sincere condolences to Ruby and family,

I met Pio about 3 years ago in our regular weekly Monday bowling practice at Suncoast Bowling Ctr. He alwsys joined the poker card game without knowing this card gsme as Pio didn't gamble, and he would ask me all the time what poker hand he has, and in spite of this he would always win. We also played golf a week after we met and i waa driving the golf cart and remember how he would ask me to stop at a restroom almost after every hole because of his prostate surgery a year or two ago. I will miss you my friend and may you rest in peace.

I see Pio with a huge smile whenever I think about him. His sense of humor and joy of life was most evident. He was a very good bowler too! My heart is broken for Ruby and all his family.

Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Ruby and the whole family of our dear friend Pio. Not only did we graduate from the same medical school in 1962, but LU and Pio were classmates in Kindergarten and early elementary school. ELy and Lu will miss his warmth, his humor, and his infectious smile

He always had a smile on his face and always joking around bringing smiles and laughter to people around him. That is my fond memory of Tio Amang as a little girl. He has departed from this earth but never truly left for he is still alive in our hearts and minds.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Jennifer, married to Phil, is my niece. She kept me informed as things progressed. I was so hopeful and worried. Now to know he is gone and I did not meet Pio I am saddened. Everything I have heard about him says he was a great man and a huge figure in the family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and may Pio Rest In Peace. As he deserves.

We always hear that death is the end of everything. Not really, especially, if we take into account the good things he has done which lives forever in our hearts. Its in that sense that I feel he is still with us.

Kuya Pio has been like a second father for most of us who came to this country and walk me and my sister down the aisle, even my daughter. He'll be missed an awful lot. So many memories to treasure. He will never be forgotten.

Tio Amang was my favorite uncle, very kind hearted and generous. I will never forget his story about the reason why he always puts a rubber band around his wallet. We will surely miss him but we will never forget him. He will always be in our hearts and prayers.
