Ernest Wardner "Sonny" Bartlett Jr
Fort Valley, GA- Fort Valley- Ernest Wardner "Sonny" Bartlett Jr., 71, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2018, surrounded by family, after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Fort Valley United Methodist Church, 301 West Church Street in Fort Valley, with Rev. Doug Mays officiating. Family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
Born in Augusta to the late Ernest Wardner Bartlett Sr. and Lillian Neely Palmer Bartlett, Sonny achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. He earned his master's degree in art education from the University of Georgia and began his teaching career in Wheeler County. He taught for five years in Wheeler County and two years in Pike County before going to Spalding County for the next twenty three years. He won numerous awards for his artwork and was the State Teacher of the Year in Art Education. He served with the Meansville Volunteer Fire Department, acting as Fire Chief for approximately twenty five years, and was the Pike County Emergency Management Agency Director for over a decade. After retiring, Sonny and his wife Patti moved to Fort Valley where he became a member of the Fort Valley Kiwanis Club and Fort Valley United Methodist Church and attended the Men's Bible Study Group. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Mercer University and the Georgia Fire Academy.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Patricia Shy "Patti" Bartlett; their children, Brian Bartlett, Lillian Walker, and Steven Bartlett (Amanda Beam); grandchildren, Josh Bartlett, Adyn Bartlett, and Molly Walker; and brother, John Bartlett (Tommie Ruth Bartlett). He is preceded in death by a son, Johnathan Michael Bartlett.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to The Georgia Firefighter's Burn Foundation (fundraise.gfbf.org) or to the Fort Valley United Methodist Church, 301 West Church St., Fort Valley, GA 31030. Rooks Funeral Home in Fort Valley is in charge of arrangements.
