Richard Mathew Poythress
November 4, 1945 - September 11, 2018
Marietta, GA- On Tuesday, September 11, 2018, Richard Mathew "Dick" Poythress, loving husband, father and family member, passed away at age 72.
Dick was born on November 4, 1945 in Macon, GA to Elwin Mathew and Dorothy Angelle (Davis) Poythress. He attended Lanier High School where he was a member of the Golden Boots Drill Team and the Chi Delta fraternity. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Economics and participated in the ROTC program. He was soon commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. He earned the National Defense Service Medal for his service in Vietnam before his honorable discharge from active service in 1971.
He worked as an economist with the state of Georgia and the federal government before becoming a financial analyst and entrepreneur. He married Dorothea (Dottie) Adele Null and they raised two sons, Trey (Christy) and Scott(Claire).
Dick had a passion for golf where he maintained a low handicap for a number of years and played great courses all around the country. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and enjoyed spending time with his family at the beach and in the mountains. He enjoyed working in the yard and spending time with his beloved Yorkie Poo, Georgia. He was known and loved for his sense of humor and kind, compassionate spirit. Dick was an active member and volunteer at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.
Dick was preceded in death by his mother and father, and brother, Marion H. Poythress, Sr. He is survived by his wife and sons; his four grandsons Joshua, Justin, Jackson, and Sam; his four sisters; Margaret L. Poythress, Mary Poythress Mundy, Dian Poythress Jackson, Sharon E. Poythress; and several cousins, nieces, nephews.
A celebration service will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta at 11:00. Donations in Dick's name can be made to the Vietnam Veteran's of America or Right from the Heart Ministries
