Robert E. "Bob" Fountain, Sr.
February 17, 1944 - August 8, 2018
Macon, GA- Robert E. "Bob" Fountain, Sr. passed away on August 8, 2018, at Pine Pointe Hospice. Mr. Fountain was born on February 17, 1944, in Macon, Georgia to the late Norris Eugene Fountain and Mary Eloise Etheridge Fountain. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at 3:00 PM at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Stephen N. Johnson and Dr. Matt Woodbery officiating. Burial will be private at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Hart's Mortuary, 765 Cherry Street, Macon, GA from 5:00PM-7:00PM.
Mr. Fountain graduated from Lanier High School for Boys, received his Associate in Engineering from Middle Georgia College and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Civil Engineering. He worked in the engineering departments of Georgia Power and Warner Robins Air Force Base before being named County Engineer for Bibb County by the Bibb County Board of Commissioners, a position he held for 30 years. He was a Registered Professional Engineer, a Registered General Contractor, as well as a Registered Land Surveyor by the State of Georgia. Upon his retirement, Bob entered the private sector. Along with his son, they created Fountain Enterprises and Construction, and Development Company, which is currently in operation today; ran by his son, Robby and daughter, Stephanie.
Mr. Fountain served on the Macon Area Transportation Study's Technical and Policy Committees; the Macon Area Planning Strategy's Technical and Policy Committees: the Road Improvement Program's Technical Advisory Committee where he served as chairman, and was on the Executive Committee; and the Bibb County Industrial Authority. He was a member of the Georgia and National Societies of Professional Engineers, the National Association of County Engineers, the American Public Works Association and the Macon Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Fountain was a member of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Macon-Bibb County Mental Health Board, the Boy Scouts of America Executive Board and the Agape Village Board. Mr. Fountain earned the Eagle Scout Award and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America. He was named Public Works Employee of the Year and the Engineer of the Year in Government by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia "Patsy" Fountain; a daughter, Stephanie McGrew (Terry), a son, Robert "Robby" Fountain Jr. (Brandi), stepsons Robert Smith (Kelly) and Tyler Smith, grandchildren Michael McGrew (Katie), Lauren and Megan Fountain, sister Brenda Fountain Mercer (Jason), mother of his children Sandra McCain, great-granddaughter Chandler McGrew and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
