Wesley Stanley Melvin
5/12/1936 - 4/10/2018
Mt. Pleasant, SC- Wesley Stanley Melvin, originally of Ft. Valley, Georgia, died in his home in Mt. Pleasant, SC on, Tuesday April 10, 2018 in the arms of his family. He was born on May 12, 1936 to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Melvin and Clarence Wesley Melvin. Wes spent most of his life living in Peach County, GA where he was loved and admired by all who knew him. In high school, Scooter (as he was known) was a star player on the Ft. Valley Greenwave football team. While in the Army, Wes met Kathleen Hinger, on a blind date, who would later become his wife and love of his life for 55 years. Together they raised two daughters of whom they are most proud, Barbara, married to Michael J. Barber, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Kasey, married to Lee Ashburn, of New Bern, North Carolina. Throughout his life, Wes was employed with Blue Bird Bus Company, John Deere, Ft. Valley Oil Company, and Rooks Funeral Home. Wes' greatest joys included spending time with family, watching college football, tinkering in his workroom and with his guns. Sharing stories and photographs of his football days with his family and friends was a favorite pastime. His success on the football field was described in an entire chapter of the book "Echoes from the Valley" by Billy Powell. Wes had his own special way of describing his views of the world which his daughter Barbara and her husband Michael dubbed "Wes-isms", and some have witnessed him giving what he called the "Melvin salute". He loved music and dancing, especially to the songs of Kenny Rogers, John Denver, and Alabama. A service to honor Wes' life will be held Tuesday, April 17 at 11:00 AM at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 950 Darrell Creek Trail, Mt Pleasant SC. An inurnment will immediately follow at the church columbarium. A reception will be held at the church succeeding the inurnment. In lieu of flowers, Wes' family requests that a memorial donation be made to the giver's or to St. Jude's, www.stjude.org.
