I was cleaning out my basement today and stumbled on a recommendation that Jane wrote for me after I took her Adult Transition Seminar at NYU in 1991. I remembered that her class was inspiring and challenging. I remembered her love of teaching and of the written word. I worked harder in her class than in any other before or since. I've kept the recommendation all these years because its content made me consider myself and my abilities as a writer and an academic in wholly new ways. Her words were a kind of literary launching pad for me, and I've spent the last 20 years writing for work and writing for fun but most importantly, just writing. I went on the Internet to find her so that I could offer thanks and say hello. The news of her passing makes me very sad, but I'm happy to hear of the impact she had on so many students like myself. Thank you Jane.

Jane was my high school english teacher - and someone who has always remained etched in my brain. In high school, along with several class mates we helped her clear our her mother's apartment in Brooklyn and taking the things to the Upper West Side - I remember speaking with Jane after reading her piece in the NYTimes about caregivers - back in 1991.

every time I walk along West End Ave - I think of her.

I am a better person and writer because of her -

She touched all of us.

Jane was a friend of my family. I will never forget her encouraging me to write when I was in my early twenties. She taught me so much more about grammar and content than I had learned in college. I still hear her in my mind to this day when I notice that I have split an infinitive, or performed some other grammatical catastrophe. She also made a valiant attempt at making me learn to love cooking. I remember her teaching me (long before the organic food craze) that farm-fresh eggs taste so much better than regular, store-bought eggs. She had such a depth and breadth of knowledge and interests.

Jane Bendetson was a member of my book group and she always impressed me with the depth of her knowledge. Her insights into a book were remarkable and I looked forward to hearing her thoughts -- and eating her delicious gravlox! She will be missed!
