Vitauts Knuble Obituary

Vitauts J. Knuble, 67
BREWER -- Vitauts 'Vits' J. Knuble, 67, passed away at Togus Veteran's Hospital in Augusta on April 8, 2012.
Vits was a successful artist and a highly decorated former Green Beret who served in the Vietnam War.
He was born on June 15, 1944, to Julianna Knuble in German-occupied Riga, Latvia. Months later, on the eve of the Russian invasion, Vits, his older brother Aivars, mother, and grandmother escaped Latvia via a refugee boat across the perilous Baltic Sea to Hamburg, Germany. In Hamburg, the family survived months of air raids by the Allied Forces prior to the German surrender.
Vits and his family spent the next five years as displaced peoples in British-controlled Lubec, Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1950. They were settled in Bangor where they were sponsored by the Lutheran Church and the Ivars family of Brewer.
Both Vits and his brother's childhoods centered around the Bangor YMCA where they excelled in swimming and basketball. Under the tutelage of John Coombs, Vits became a star swimmer, lettering at Bangor High before graduating in 1963. Vits would later coach the YMCA swim team from 1968 to 1970 and would stay involved with the Y for the rest of his life. In addition to sports, Vits played guitar in several high school bands and began his nascent art career in junior high school, selling skilled illustrations of Elvis to other students.
After high school, Vits entered the U.S. Army where he became a member of the 82nd Airborne, before volunteering for Special Forces where he completed the SCUBA course, CBR training, became a Jump Master, and completed a year of the Special Forces medical training. In 1967, Vits was deployed to the Vietnam War as a member and medical specialist for the 5th Special Forces Group A-233 'A-Team' and later A-236. Vits was also attached to SOG and became an honorary member and 'medicine man' of Vietnam's Montagnards tribe. Vits saw heavy combat in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and was wounded multiple times before completing his tour highly decorated.
In 1968, Vits returned to Maine where he attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1972 with a BA in Political Science. He was a member of Kappa Sigma, a Dean's List student and earned his commission as the commanding officer of the First Maine Cadet's Brigade.
Vits married long time love and fellow UMaine student, Mary Anne Day of Brewer, on Nov. 11, 1972.
Vits spent the next 12 years on active duty beginning with the 75th Rangers out of Ft. Lewis, Wash. Other assignments included Company Commander of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group and as an instructor for the Special Forces qualifying course under the command of the JFK Institute for Military Assistance in Ft. Bragg, N.C. During this time, he was also stationed in Germany, completed the infamous Navy SEALS UDT/BUDS course, and was engaged in special operations in Central America, the Middle East,
Vitauts J. Knuble
and the Mediterranean. In 1984, Vits and Mary Anne moved backto Maine with their two sons, Eric and Joseph, where Vits joined the Army Reserves for three years as a Special Forces Instructor, frequently on assignment in Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. He retired from the Army in 1987 as a Major.
For the remainder of his life Vits worked as a full time artist creating a body of work that reflected his love of nature and for Maine. He became nationally recognized as a master of the art of painting in the tradition of American Realism. His works are widely collected with pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection. Vits was also a highly successful portrait artist and was a member of The American Portrait Society, a Charter Member of the Portrait Institute of New York at Carnegie Hall, and a Signature member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society. His watercolors sold at galleries around the country and he completed many commissioned portraits for a diverse roster of clientele that included Stephen King, John McKernan, and The University Club of Washington, D.C.
Deeply affected by the loss of Mary Anne to breast cancer in 1998, Vits has made numerous donations to various breast cancer charities. His charitable and volunteer work also extended to support of the YMCA, St. Joseph's Hospital, the University of Maine Hockey program, Veteran's charities, little league baseball, and various youth programs.
In between painting, Vits enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, running, golf, giving art classes, and continued competitive Master's Swimming where he won several ribbons in his age group over the years. He was also a voracious reader, a lively debater and a master of informing others of their short comings.
Vits was known for his legendary sense of humor, his love of family and friends and selflessness. Vits did not suffer fools gladly, however his well known imposing presence and gruff exterior belied a deeply generous and insightful nature which endeared him to many.
In addition to his parents and Mary Anne, Vits was predeceased by his brother, Aivars. He is survived by his two sons, Eric Knuble of New York City, Joseph Knuble of Washington, D.C.; and his nephews, Mike Knuble of Virginia and Stephen Knuble of Alabama.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2012, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, with Fritz Homans officiating. I remember when he came to Vine St. School in second grade. He didnt speak English. His story of escape affected me tremendously as a seven year old. I always admired his family and their determination. We were in many classes through the years in Bangor.
God Bless him and his loved ones.

Eric,
We knew you as a toddler, when your dad was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany. Your dad shared an apartment with my husband and your mom brought you over to Germany for a few weeks.
Your dad and mom were remarkable people. Your dad made a wonderful turkey dinner for us once and I still have your mom's recipe for apple cake. The few times that you were with us, your mom refused to use the word "no" with you!!! You were "into" turning lights off and on, so we spent most of the evening sitting either in light or total darkness.
I hope your dad took the time to explain some of his dad's, your grandfather's exploits during the Nazi era. Your father was a very unique individual!! We were very lucky to have had him in our lives!

Vits you are so deeply missed already. Always knew you approved when you flashed that smile of yours. That smile was contagious! You were always great for a debate and more often than not you won no matter who it was with or what it was about. I always loved hearing your life stories! You were an amazing man Vits. To Vits's boys, he always talked very highly of you, your families, and all of your accomplishments. He was a very proud man! Vits you were a wonderful person, gonna miss you big guy!

We never had the pleasure of meeting Vits but have heard many heartwarming stories from his family in Michigan. His artistic talent was admired by all who viewed it. We send our sympathy and prayers to his sons and family.

I've only known Vits for the last 10 years or so, but in that short time I can tell you he was a challenge, at times, exasperating, mischievous, shy, childlike, loyal, full of generosity, sweet and sour and a “force to be reckoned with.” In a word: a curmudgeon. “A walking contradiction.” His relationship with my friend Sherry developed into an ongoing contest of wills that at times was difficult to understand; but in the end, it was apparent that these two people loved each other intensely. In the past few years, I got daily bulletins on his health as he faced one challenge after another. Vits was a very private man, so it would be late at night or when Sherry could get away, that she would call. Even through the tears, we would share laughter at how determined he was. Even in his final descent, he would not relinquish control. I doubt that I will ever experience the loyalty that Sherry had for Vits and his kindness to her. My sympathy to his sons. He was a man of high intellect and great talent, but it is his humanity that will always travel with me.

As a former Bangor YMCA Leaders Club member, Vits and Aivars became good friends with me and a group of other East siders spending many enjoyable hours at the Y together with John Coombs and Jack Wise. Memories I will always cherish. I wish the entire Knuble family deepest condolences during this time of sorrow.

Thank you for the kind words everybody. Vits was many things to many people (and ONE thing to even more ;). Of course for my brother and I, he was always just our dad and also our hero. I don't think it's set in just how much we'll miss him, but from the very day he left us this world he strode already seems like a more boring place. Thank you for everything, Dad.

Walk on, Ranger...

Love,
Eric

I remember fondly the times we would visit my Uncle Vits and listen to his larger-than-life stories. My brother Steve and I would sit and listen for hours. Great memories of a great Uncle.

I knew Vits during high school but lost track of him after that. He would amaze me and my parents with his stories of his families journey to the US. He was always polite and shy but yet ready for a good debate. I had always wondered what happened to this incredibally talented guy. Now from reading his Obituary and all these testimonials I know he lived the life I fully expected he would with honor and gusto. My heart goes out to his family who were so fortunate to have him for so many years.

We'll miss Vits terribly. He was a good friend, a wonderfully talented artist, a kind man. He was as well extraordinarily considerate to our (now adult) children who he knew from birth, or just after. We treasure his paintings, especially the portraits, not least is the one he painted of my now-deceased father, a retired RCAF/RAF WWII vet. Donnamarie and I pray for Vits, and Mary, and our condolences to the boys, Joe and Eric -- fine young men that made Vits proud. Mark & Donnamarie Mills

Vitz was the Waterfront Director one summer when I attended a now-defunct summer camp for boys in Franklin, ME. His love for swimming, both above and underwater, was obvious and contagious even back then. Still remember the choices of pre-breakfast exercises including "Swim with Vitz." And even then (the early 1960's) telling us that if we wanted "a real summer camp experience" to go see our local Marine recruiter and tell them we wanted to go to their summer camp! Ironically, I was thinking of that summer camping experience and Vitz just a week or so ago, although I hadn't heard or thought of him for decades. My condolences to his fellow veterans, friends and family...

After being in the hospital, for nearly the last two months and Vits visiting me and never letting on about his own health issues, a certain visit comes to mind. A month ago I was in I.C.U. and couldn't have visitors. About 7:30 one night, this shadow filled my doorway as some one entered my room. Then "the voice" said: Get out of bed, Troop!! You've been malingering in here, too long. I'm here to break you out!! My nurse let him stay with me a couple of hours. Only Vits could pull that off......Looking back to last year when Vits and I flew down to Washington to visit Joe and watch his nephew Mike play for the Washington Capitals, little did I know, how much that trip will mean to me for the rest of my days. My condolences to all the family.....

Vits presence on the swim deck was one that cannot be forgotten. He loomed larger than life. There are so many young swimmers that started their pool days with him and were forever influenced by him. The debt we owe him for his service to our country can never be repaid. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I remember Vits starting in 2nd grade at Vine Street School. I remember being in awe of his past and getting to the USA. I remember him passing me a Valentines box of chocolates because his friend John didn't dare to give them to me, that was in 6th grade. I was on the Y swim team with him in high school. He was a good friend to a boyfriend of mine on that team. His name was Bob Arsenault who has also passed away. I have many wonderful memories of Vitauts. So sorry!

Vits was in my class at BHS. I knew that he was listening to a different song, one that he successfully embellished. During a visit to Castine several years ago, I purchased one of Vits' water colors titled "Beal Island Yacht". The scene is of an old wooden dory perched on a sand dune. Every time that I look at that painting I picture Vits from our high school days.
My condolences to the family.

Vit's obituary speaks of a man who lived a full and productive life. He certainly marched to a different drummer and was often on the other side of an argument. Vits and I were regularly at odds but I respected him and being a Marine and Viet Nam veteran, I gave him grief about the Army. But, Vits was Special Forces, and that's a group that stands with the best. Because of guys like him, America is a safer place to live. Semper Fidelis Major, and the rest of us will join you in due time.
