Patrick Damon Obituary

Patrick Daniel Damon, 41
FALMOUTH -- Patrick Daniel Damon, 41, of Falmouth, died unexpectedly June 15, 2006, at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan while serving in the 240th Engineer Group of the Maine Army National Guard.
The son of Ellsworth Damon and Barbara Damon Day, Pat was born in Portland and grew up in Newcastle. He graduated from the Hyde School in Bath, earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Economics from American University in Washington, D.C., and a Master's Degree from the Muskie School of Public Policy at the University of Southern Maine. Pat had served in the Army National Guard for twenty years, earning the rank of captain.
Pat had a distinguished career in Maine State Government, including serving as Chief of Staff in both the House Speaker's Office and House Majority Office. Prior to his deployment to Afghanistan, he was serving as Administrative Director of the Maine Public Utilities Commission. Pat was widely respected and admired by his colleagues for his extraordinary work ethic, positive attitude, and unparalleled command of public policy issues and strategies.
Pat brought an unusual compassion and enthusiasm to his work and found great satisfaction in finding creative solutions to problems faced by ordinary Maine people. He was a gifted problem solver, and considered public service a privilege and his true calling.
Pat valued his family above all. He was especially devoted to his loving wife of 19 years, Hildi Halley, and their beloved children, Mikayla, 14, and Jan-Christian, 12. Together, the family enjoyed school events at the Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport, where the children are students, and camping vacations around Maine and the Maritimes. Pat also leaves behind his mother and father; beloved twin sister, Alecia, with whom he grew up and remained close throughout his life; brother-in-law, Mark Tenney; mother-in-law, Hilda Julia; father-in-law, Ted Norbert; father-in-law, Gustavo Halley Sr.; mother-in-law, Sarah Halley; brother-in-law, Gustavo Halley; and step-father, Richard Day.

I served with CPT Damon in Afghanistan. I only knew him for a few months before his passing, but I considered him a friend. I was an augmentee from another state, but he made me feel welcome and part of the group. He has been in my thoughts a lot lately now that I'm on another deployment. The last time I saw him was three years ago today when I finished my shift at the Chamberlain TOC. My best wishes to his family.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Patrick, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I just learned of Pat's passing tonight while randomly browsing the Hyde website. I hadn't received the latest alumni newsletters. I can't describe how saddened I am. I would say that Pat was the best friend I had at Hyde. We ran cross-country and track together, and he was a great teammate and athlete. He was always in the know about everything going on, and was one of the very few people I confided in then. I remember he hitchiked across the country and visited me while I was in my freshman year at CU Boulder (1984). He had an intrepid explorer side to him. I also remember on the very day I was leaving Boulder after graduation (1989) and moving to Vermont, a woman from the Federal Government visited me to ask questions about Pat. He had listed me as a reference on an application to become a federal investigator, and I told her it made perfect sense to me because he always had the inside scoop on everything! She also laughed so hard she cried at the stories I told her of the mischief the two of us got into at Hyde. (I think he got that job?) I have so many great stories and memories of Pat, and I had always looked forward to recounting them with him someday, after all the years. My deepest sympathies go out to his mother Barbara, and sister Alecia, who I knew at Hyde, and to his family Hildi, Mikayla, and Jan-Christian, who I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. I will be remembering and celebrating him...

Dear Hildy and family,

Pat was one of my best friends at Lincoln Academy- we were very close. I was with you at the service in Maine recently but did not want to impose Hildy as I had only met you briefly once years ago in DC. The service was a very fitting tribute. I cried my eyes out, especially when the chorus played "In My Life".

I offer you, Hildy, and your family heartfelt best wishes and strength. What wonderful children you have; I know Pat was so proud.

I am so glad he had you all to walk through the world with these years. -Gwen Bell

Like most say who knew Patrick, it was an honor to know him. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. I was a member of the Officer Commissioning Board at Patrick's Officer commissioning. He was head and shoulder's above his peers. In the following years since I have known Patrick both within the Maine Army National Guard where I served for 28 years after returning from Active Duty. I have also had many frequent discussions with Patrick about our work in State government which we enjoyed. He will be badly missed by me, by my wife Peggy who found such great counsel in his soft conversations, and the men and woman he worked with - civilian and military.

Patrick you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.

I send each of you a hug from the most inner part of my heart.

I always loved Pat. I remember him as one of the truly good people in this world...kind, gentle. He had a beautiful smile. He was a goofball too...we had a lot of laughs, and a lot of deep discussions. We used to joke that "Pat knew something about everything, except surfing and sailing"...and I bet he learned something about those subjects too.

I remember when he drove up to Domino's pizza in a backhoe, and how he would hold the gas pump nozzle up to get "every last drop of gas" because "you never know when you'll need that last fume."

There was never an ounce of malice in his soul...he was a good friend...he could find a way to relate to anybody.

I am so proud of him...I am proud of his service to our country, and his faithfulness to Hildi and his family. 19 years of marriage says a lot about the man.

i am so sorry that he and I lost track of each other over the years...I often think of him...but have gotten so absorbed in my own life...the loss is a reminder of how important it is to tell those that you love how much they mean to you...today...

To Barbara, Hildi, and Alecia....please know that I am thinking about you...I wish there were some words I could write that would make it all better...you have all touched my life so much...I miss you all, send you my deepest love and sympathy...we will all miss him. May God bless you all...

with love and sympathy,

June 23, 2006

To the Family of Capt. Patrick Damon;

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

I will never forget my first impression of Pat. We had just moved in across the street and Pat was out running around in his front yard, wearing his combat helmet and cutting limbs off an ice covered tree! We really didn't know what to expect. As it turns out, Pat was a pleasure to know. We still miss the neighborhood. My deepest sympathies to the entire family.

June 21, 2006

I still remember Patrick's inquisitive nature. How he would ask questions of Grampy Hinds or my dad, the grin on his face when they answered his question, and the sparkle in his eye, the excitement building behind his words, as he came back with an even better reason for his point of view. He always had so much information about a topic of debate that he could turn the mightiest of opponents to his side. I looked up to Pat when we were growing up and then we moved to the west coast we got busy with our lives, but when I came back to Maine to visit he was the same cousin I always looked up to, just a little older and wiser. I have never known anyone like Patrick and I will never forget him. I pray for Hildi,Mikayla,Jan-Christian,aunt barbra and Alecia and hope they can come together and help each other through this extremely difficult time in their lives.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Pat Damon. It was my honor to know him through his work at the State House. He was always fair-minded and helpful -- a public servant in the best and truest sense of the phrase.

June 20, 2006

I have fond childhood memories of Patrick ( as a first cousin). We had many family holiday and non holiday dinners at Nana and Grampys house. Running around and playing in their yard. As Partick got older(high school) I remember Patrick debating with my Dad (Sam Hinds) and Grampy Hinds; about politics. He cared deeply for his grandparents Mildred and Samuel C Hinds. Patrick has always (even as a child) been a person to look up to. He always seemed to do every thing right. Patrick will be sadly missed. He was taken from this earth at far too young of an age. I'm sad my children haven't had the chance to meet him. When they play with their first cousins; I will fondly think of Patrick and the family bond established young in life.

My thought and Prayers are with you(Hilde,Mikayla,Jan-Christian,Aun
