J. Haws Obituary

J. Frank Haws, 93, passed away on November 24, 2017, at Hamlet Village, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He was born on July 3, 1924, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Frank lived most of his adult life in St. Davids, Delaware County, Pennsylvania and just recently moved to Ohio with his wife of 67 years, Doris Spindle Haws. Frank was a graduate of MIT and served in the U.S. Army. He had a distinguished career as an architect and was a principal in the architectural firm of Stonorov and Haws. The firm did several major projects including Hopkinson House in Philadelphia, the India Pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair and the United Automobile Workers’ Retreat and Education Facility in Black Lake, Michigan. Frank was a quiet, gentle man of many talents. He designed and built his home, was a skilled photographer and pilot and enjoyed gardening, especially growing vegetables. Residents of the Main Line were the beneficiaries of his gardening skills as Frank, for many years, grew hundreds of heirloom tomatoes in his basement. The tomato plants were made available through Do It Best Hardware of Wayne and scores of people were introduced to the Brandywine, Lemon Boy and Yellow Pear to Frank’s delight. Frank was predeceased by his parents, George L. and Essie Lloyd Haws, his sisters, Janet Haws Keim and Marie Haws Johnson, and his daughter, Pamela D. Haws. He is survived by his wife, Doris, daughters; Wendy Hopkins (Christopher) and Lauren Bilbrey (Mitchell) grandchildren; Skyler Dewey (James), Myca Hopkins, Guyver Hopkins and Whitney Hopkins and great grandchildren; Holden Dewey and Arthur Franklin Dewey. All services were private.
