William J. Butler, 95, of West Chester, PA passed away on December 15, 2020. Born in Coatesville, PA in 1925, he was the son of the late William James and Helen (Harkins) Butler. Mr. Butler was a life-long resident of Chester County. At a very young age, he and his family moved to Berwyn. He was a resident of Berwyn for the next fifty eight years. In 1987 he and his sister Helen moved to Hershey’s Mill in East Goshen Township, and has lived there until his death. William attended St. Monica’s parochial school and West Catholic High School for Boys. As a young boy, he started to caddy at Tredyffrin Country Club in Paoli, which is where he got hooked on golf. He has been an avid golfer all of his life and has been a member of several local golf clubs, including Chester Valley Golf Club, Concord Country Club and Hershey’s Mill Golf Club. He served honorably in the US Navy during World War II, in the south Pacific and South China Sea. He was a member of the Navy League, Philadelphia Chapter. In 1947, William went to work for Penn Dot. He started in surveying, where he worked for fifteen years. He then transferred into construction where he worked for twenty years. He began as inspector, then moved up to project engineer on roads and bridges. After thirty years of service, he retired in 1982. After his retirement, William was a snow bird and lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. in the winter months, where he was a member of Jacaranda County Club. Mr. Butler joined the Berwyn Fire Company in 1941 as a school boy Fireman. He was an active firefighter for over thirty years and was active with the ambulance service for over twenty years. He was involved with the Administration of the Berwyn Fire Company for many years, serving as President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Trustee. Probably the office he is most remembered for is the Office of Treasurer, which he held on and off for thirty years. In addition to his parents, William was predeceased by his siblings; Helen T., Thomas, John Francis and Michael Butler. He has no survivors. Services will be held at a later date.
