Guenther H. Boden of Gladwyne Guenther H. Boden, 80, Physician, Professor, Researcher: On Tuesday, October 13, 2015, Dr. Boden, the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Medicine at Temple University Hospital, died of pancreatic cancer. During his 45 year tenure at Temple, Dr. Boden was the Chief of Endocrinology/Metabolism and Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center. Dr. Boden graduated with an M.D. from the University of Munich Medical School in 1959. He continued his post-graduate training as a fellow in Biochemistry at Tuebingen University in Germany followed by a fellowship at the E.P. Joslin Research Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. He completed his post-graduate training in Rochester, NY. Dr. Boden was one of the seminal and most prolific researchers worldwide in the field of clinical endocrinology. He authored approximately 250 publications and was supported by the National Institutes of Health for over 40 successive years. Dr Boden’s research in insulin resistance and sensitivity has been instrumental in shaping the field of endocrinology and has helped evolve the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr. Boden received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, Temple’s Sol Sherry Award and most recently Temple’s Lifetime Achievement Award. When not working, Dr. Boden enjoyed skiing, playing tennis, and sailing. Dr. Boden is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Irene Boden, his children Karin Etkin (David), Stephanie Wenstrup (Jayson), Eric (Elisabeth), Dirk (Amie), his seven grandchildren, and his sisters Ilse Moritz (Peter) and Marianne Reuther. A celebration of life is scheduled for 12:00 pm on November 1st at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia located at 19 South 22nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
