Allen Walters Obituary

Allen Douglas Walters, Sr.

MANSFIELD: Allen Walters had many names. In his youth most folks knew him as "Red," his Army buddies knew him as "Buckshot," friends knew him as "Cobb," students knew him as "Coach," and when he goofed off he was known as "Toad." No matter the name, everyone knew him as loud, charismatic and hardworking.

Allen Douglas Walters, Sr. passed away Saturday morning, December 7, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness. He was 73.

Born May 27, 1940 in Camp Dix, KY he was the son of Phister and Hazel (Stone) Walters. He was graduated from Chesterville High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Ashland College.

Allen served 3 tours in Vietnam as a member of the US Army where he was awarded 3 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, Good Conduct medals and numerous other accolades. His 12 year career in the military stuck with him: every single Sunday Allen took time to shine his shoes and sharpen his knives.

On July 7, 1982 he married Angela Bailey. Upon graduation from college he took a job as Director of Community Employment for MARCA in Marion where he had his second civil service retirement after 21 years of service in 2008.

Allen's talents extended far beyond his employment, he was a motivational speaker to area high schools and prisons and a coach for the Mount Gilead Blues baseball team and the MARCA Hawks basketball team (under his leadership they went to State Championships in 1991). He loved sports of all kinds but especially cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Indians, and Cincinnati Reds. In spare time he would play golf, chop wood or go shooting. His hidden talent was singing.

He was a member of Harvest Fellowship in Lexington, VFW Post #8054 in Mount Gilead, AMVETS Post #31 in Ontario, American Legion Post #30 in Delaware, and the Masonic Lodge #320 in Chesterville.

Allen is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Angela Walters of Lexington; 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law Allen Douglas Walters, Jr. and Miriam Elizabeth Walters of Mansfield, Eric Lee Walters and Holly Walters of Mount Gilead, and Dakota Austin Walters of Lexington; 2 granddaughters Sierra and Raygan Walters of Mount Gilead; a brother-in-law Norman Brown; a sister-in-law Nellie Walters; Beverly Carpenter (mother to Doug and Eric Walters); and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings: Beatrice Walters, Harry Calvin Walters, Janet Brown, and Raymond Alton Walters.

The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where his funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12. Pastor Brian Mosher will officiate and burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery in Johnsville with military honors performed by the VFW Post #8054 and AMVETS Post #87.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project and sent in the care of the funeral home: P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904.

He was a "big teddy bear" with the Marca team. He worked with them, encouraged them, and made them feel like they were the best basketball team in the world! Forever in memory!

To Al's family...I had the honor and pleasure of working with Al at MARCA for a few years. What a wonderful person he was! The consumers absolutely loved him. I'd see him take a person under his wings and develop them into the best worker ever! It was amazing! He had such a gift...I know that he has been missed by many at MARCA since he retired from there...the community has lost a great person...In Deepest Sympathy...Cheryl Kelley
