Leroy Black Obituary

Lynn Leroy "Roy" Black

LEXINGTON: Lynn Leroy "Roy" Black, 90, of Lexington and formerly of Butler went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, November 25, 2012, at MedCentral Hospice.

The eldest son of Harley M. and Nina G. (Fike) Black, Roy was born in his family's farmhouse on Macy Road outside of Butler on July 27, 1922. He graduated salutatorian of the Butler High School class of 1940.

A World War II Navy veteran, Roy earned Seaman first class status before graduating as Quartermaster third class from Quartermaster and Signal School in Gulf Port, Mississippi before serving aboard the U.S.S. Dorchester in Japan. After the war, he was honorably discharged and returned home. In 1998, the Village of Butler honored Roy as Veteran of the Year during the Butler Memorial Day ceremony.

At the age of 25, Roy was employed by The CCC Trucking Company in Mansfield for five years before taking over the family farm. Roy married Lois Ernsberger of Lucas on December 23, 1951.

Besides farming, Roy was an independent trucker employed primarily by D.H. Bowman and Sons in Bellville. He also served as a substitute and eventually full-time rural mail carrier for the Butler Post Office for a total of 30 years prior to his retirement from the postal service in 1986.

A charter member of the Worthington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Roy served as a volunteer firefighter for a number of years. He also served as a member of the Butler School Board and the Richland County Farm Bureau.

Roy grew up in the Bunkerhill Presbyterian Church, which he also attended for many years as an adult. Later he and his family joined the Bunkerhill Baptist Church for a number of years. He faithfully served in both churches in various capacities including deacon, elder, trustee, Sunday school teacher, and youth group leader. Additionally, Roy served for many years as sextant, trustee, and secretary for the Bunkerhill Independent Cemetery Association until the time of his death. In the 70s, Roy and his wife, Lois, joined Grace Fellowship Church in Mansfield, where they were both very active.

Naturally athletic, Roy enjoyed playing softball, often as short stop, well into his 60s and early 70s with various local teams in the Butler/Bellville/Mansfield areas as well as at his retirement homes in Arizona and Florida. He and Lois also participated in various bowling leagues through the years. More recently, Roy was often spotted "tooling" around Lexington on his bicycle or taking two hour bike trips to Bellville and back on the bike trail.

Roy is survived by his son, Stanley (Kitty) Black of Lexington; daughter, Connie (Aaron) Zhu of Mansfield; grandchildren, Mike Black of Zanesfield; Jean (Shane) Goin of Tennessee; Alyona Zhu of Westerville; and Antonina Zhu of Mansfield; great grandchildren, Gregory and Cody Goin of Tennessee and Alexis Black of Ashland; brother, Dale Black of Bellville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, to whom he was married for 59 years.

The Black family will receive family and friends Wednesday, November 28, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Grace Fellowship Church, 365 Straub Road East, Mansfield, Ohio 44903, where funeral services celebrating the life of Lynn Leroy "Roy" Black will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535 will follow in Bunkerhill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Grace Fellowship Church may be made through the funeral home.

Hello Family of Roy - we were neighbors for many years - also attended the Bunker Hill church. The Black family will also be remembered with fond memories - saw Dale last year at the town center where I was attending a class reunion. God Bless.
