Grace Hoover Obituary

Grace Katherine "Katie" Hoover

CRESTLINE: Grace Katherine 'Katie' Hoover, 93, of 6897 Remlinger Rd., Crestline, passed away peacefully Monday, April 1, 2013 at Galion Community Hospital, Galion.

Katie was born in Resaca, in Madison County, on February 27, 1920 to the late Edgar and Georgia (Strete) DeVore. Her parents named her after both of her grandmothers. She married Arthur W. Hoover on October 1, 1938 and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1982.

Living in the Crestline area most of her life, Katie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Crestline. She worked at the former Crestline Memorial Hospital for 20 years as a nurse's aide. A graduate of Leesville High School, Class of 1938, Katie was one of the six girls that made up the entire class. (The six boys all failed out of school in their junior year.) Katie went to church with her Grandpa Strete and was fascinated watching the organist play at services. She decided then that this was what she wanted to do. Katie was given the gift of one summer of organ lessons by Edna Volk and played piano and organ for the rest of her life. Katie was the organist at the Leesville United Methodist Church for 75 years; playing at the church until it closed. After the closing of the church, she continued to play and was asked to play for Maundy Thursday Services at the First United Methodist Church this past Holy Week. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society. Katie belonged to the Crestline and Galion Golden Age Clubs, and Positive Christian Singles of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Galion. She also played piano for the Jing-A-Lings in Galion. Katie was named the 2004 Outstanding Senior Citizen of Crawford County and received the 2011 Volunteer of the Year award from the Ohio State Grange.

Music was Katie's life. She has played piano in area nursing homes for residents for many years. She was invited to play at the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ at the Renaissance Theater. On a Thanksgiving Cruise of the Caribbean, Katie spent most of her vacation playing piano and organ for her fellow shipmates. One of the last things her husband told her was to "Keep the road hot" and that she did, driving her car right up until the very end.

She is survived by her two daughters and son: Connie Gray of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Dale and Jan Hoover of Columbus, and Carol and Dick Kanable of Crestline; eight grandchildren, Kimberly and Richard Manser of Tampa, FL, Tina Payne of Indian Lake, Chad and Laura Kanable of North Canton, Angie Hoover-Dorton of Austin, TX, Scott Hoover of Columbus, Taryn Kanable and Jeremy Hutton of Greensboro, NC, Kirstin Carnes and Kyle Kershner of Mansfield, and Karissa Carnes of North Canton; four great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Swartz and her fiancé Robbie Etters of Bellefontaine, Mason Hoover of Worthington, Sophia Kershner of Mansfield, and Bently Kershner of Mansfield, her sister, Betty Brown of Twinsburg and her sister-in-law Teddy Cuffari of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth DeVore and Marion Hoss, her brothers, Edgar "Ed" DeVore and Robert DeVore, and her grandson, Keith Gray, Jr.

Friends may call Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Crestline. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral services which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Crestline, with Pastor Nathan Nordine officiating. Burial will follow in Biddle Cemetery, Crestline.

The Dapper Log Cabin, which was the Hoover family home for 15 years (until 1955), was located on the family farm on Remlinger Road and is dated from 1841. The cabin has been disassembled and is to be rebuilt as an education center on the school grounds of Colonel Crawford Middle School. Memorial contributions in Katie's name may be made to the "Fund for Katie's Cabin" in care of the funeral home.

Not sure what to say?

I last saw Katie at her 90th birthday party in Leesville. So glad to have known her. She was a fun person all her life and had so many interests. I always enjoyed talking to her. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren and her many friends. We were lucky to have had her as long as we did!
