Mervin L. DeLong
MANSFIELD: Mervin L. DeLong, 93, of Mansfield, died Wednesday afternoon, May 15, 2013 at MedCentral Shelby Hospital. He was born November 1, 1919 in Mansfield to the late Ora and Gladys (Dishong) DeLong. Mervin graduated from Union High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician during WWII.
He grew up on a farm and was in charge of the day-to-day operations from the age of 12. His strong work ethic remained throughout his life, working 29 years at Mansfield Tire and Rubber and retiring from Tappan, never missing a day of work. In his spare time, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, woodworking, baseball in his younger years and built the home he lived in as an adult.
Mervin was a hardworking, giving man who exhibited high integrity in every aspect of his life. He was a great role model to others and was led by the Holy Spirit. Mervin was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, helping with the transportation ministry for the elderly.
Mervin is survived by a daughter, Barb DeLong-Lieb of Mansfield; two sons, Larry (Beth) DeLong of Grove City and Bob DeLong of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Erin DeLong, Brendon Lieb, Hannah Lieb, Jeanette (Chris) Hardy; two great-grandchildren, Maddilyn and Emelia; three sisters, Edith Augustine of West Salem, Donna (Dave) Maxwell and Mary DeLong of Mansfield; two brothers-in-law, Paul (DaLee) Gottfried and John (Gladys) Gottfried, both of Mansfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Gottfried DeLong; two sons, Douglas and Richard DeLong; and two brothers, Kenneth and Dean DeLong.
Friends and family may visit from 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with additional visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Burial in Mansfield Cemetery will follow the service with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Hospice.
