Edward F. Byrns

GALION: Edward F. Byrns, 85, of Galion, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Olentangy Woods Nursing Center in Galion.

Born August 2, 1927 in Galion, he was the son of the late Edward A. and Hazel (Moore) Byrns. He was preceded in death on June 24, 2012 by his wife, Elva Jean (McClure) Byrns whom he married on June 12, 1949.

He was a graduate of Galion High School in 1945 and served in the United States Army at the end of World War II. He trained at U. S. Military Preparatory School at Amherst College for entrance to West Point and was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division Band. A long-time member of First United Church of Christ Ed served as a deacon and elder and played in the Sunday School Orchestra which was organized in 1924 and disbanded in 1961, directed by Charles and Bertha Tracht. Ed was a member of the American Legion Post 243 in Galion where he played in the Legion Band. He was an avid hunter and member of Ducks Unlimited. Ed was employed in the cost department at the former Perfection-Cobey Co. for 37 years, later retiring from Peabody-Galion.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gloria Byrns of Lucas; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Martin Estep of Galion; one granddaughter, Bonnie Smith of Columbus; one great granddaughter, Madelyn Smith of Columbus and three step-grandchildren, Missy McCleese of Galion, Mark Brown and Kim (Rich) Patrlja of Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one infant sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 26, with Rev. Katherine Beckett officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery where full military graveside services will be held by the United States Army and Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
