Jack Allen Smith, Sr.

ASHLAND: Jack Allen Smith, Sr., age 64, passed away Monday evening, March 11, 2013 at Samaritan Regional Health Systems. He was born April 19, 1948 in Crestline, Ohio to the late Ira Thomas and Mary Ellen (Carter) Smith. He was formerly employed at General Motors. Jack served honorable in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from October 1969 to December 1970, receiving several medals. Music was a passion and he enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to country music. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing. Jack was a member of Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F & AM and received his 32nd degree distinction; he was also a member of the Valley of Canton, V.F.W. Post #1067 in Ashland, Amvets Post #0096 in Ashland and F.O.E. #336 in Mansfield.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Kay (Richards) Smith of Mifflin; son, Jack A. Smith, Jr. of Mansfield; stepchildren, Joey Smith, Steve Smith, Dion Bowersock, all of Mansfield, Carol Bowersock of Ashland, and Angi Bowersock of Tampa, FL; five brothers, Tom (Heather) Smith of Canada, Charles (Mary Ellen) Smith of Toledo, Billy (Debbie) Smith of West Valley, UT, John (Marcy) Smith and Harold Smith, both of Mansfield; daughter-in-law, Tami Bowersock of Kent; several grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his beloved pet, Aires. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Ronald Smith; special friend, Norm Hildebrand; and stepson, Stormy Bowersock.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield with Dr. Rich Rader officiating. Friends and family may visit beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad.
