MANSFIELD: Rev. John Calvin Porter Sr., 82, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Riverside Methodist Hospital after an extended illness.

Rev. Porter was born September 15, 1931, in Omaha, NE, to the late Dempsey Porter and Birdie Mae Bradley.

Rev. Porter was a member of Turner Chapel CME (also known as the Piano Porter) began preaching at the age of 13; many churches would request Rev. Porter services. He has played and preached at St. Luke's COGIC; Mitchell Chapel AME, Providence Baptist Church, Mt. Hermon Baptist and he was the organist for Second Baptist Church of Wooster for 30 years.

Rev. Porter leaves to cherish in his memory four daughters, Shirley (Richard) Porter-Hadnot, of Houston, TX, Brenda Porter, of Mansfield, Karen L. Porter and Joyce Porter, both of Houston, TX; two sons, John C. Porter Jr., of Niagara Falls, NY and Kevin M. Porter, of Houston, TX; a sister, Thelma J. Porter, of Andalusia, AL; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren; two special friends, Patsy Rambo and Henry Webber, both of Mansfield; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James E. Porter.

The services will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 11 a.m., with one hour prior calling at Community Temple COGIC, 338 Harker St., Mansfield, Ohio 44903, with Rev. Henry Bradley officiating. The burial will follow at Mansfield Cemetery.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends of the daughter's home, 421 Parkview St., Mansfield, Ohio 44903, until the day of the services.

The family has entrusted Small's Funeral Services with the arrangements.
