SHELBY: Wayne Spiegel McDowell, age 84, of Shelby, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Med Central Shelby Hospital following a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Mr. McDowell was born on January 17, 1930 in Bucyrus, Ohio to the late Roy and Marie (Spiegel) McDowell. He graduated from Holmes Liberty High School. Wayne was a Korean War veteran of four years being stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia for one year. While in New York with the Air Force, Wayne attended school. Mr. McDowell was employed for 30 years at Columbia Gas. After his retirement he enjoyed working for several years as a Schmidt Security Guard. He was a member of The Quarter Century Club with Columbia Gas, was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Shelby American Legion. Wayne was a thoughtful and devoted member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby and enjoyed attending Catholic Shrines with his family and praying the rosary. He was a loving husband and father especially to his crippled daughter for whom he made parallel bars and equipment to assist her.

On May 18, 1953, Wayne married Virginia Bechtel at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in New Washington, Ohio. They were married for 60 years and she survives; also surviving are: two daughters: Alice Marie McDowell and Ann Philomena McDowell both of Shelby; brother-in-law: Richard (Mary Ellen) Bechtel of Worthington, OH; sister-in-law: Mrs. Ann Rotterdam of Toledo. He was preceded in death by: his parents: Roy and Marie (Spiegel) McDowell; two brothers: Donald (Edith) McDowell, Robert McDowell; mother and father-in-law: Leland and Mary Alice Bechtel; brother-in-law: Rev. Charles Bechtel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 26 West Street, Shelby with Fr. James Sanford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Calling hours will not be observed as per Wayne's wishes. Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Care for Wayne and his family is being provided by Bob, Catherine, and Jake at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby.
