SHELBY: Pearl S. ter Braak, age 97, resident of Shelby, died Friday, March 28, 2014 in MedCentral/Shelby Hospital following complications from pneumonia.

Born July 10, 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late William, Sr. and Rose (Willi) Samuels she grew up in Missouri. After living in Hamilton and Middletown,Ohio she moved to Shelby in 1955. She graduated from Maplewood High School, Missouri where she was a member of the Honor Society and a princess on the homecoming court. After high school, Pearl was employed as a dental assistant. In 1940 she married Harry ter Braak and in 1955 they moved to Shelby to start the Shelby YMCA where she was very involved in helping her husband. She also was employed as a secretary for Central Ohio Warehouse.

In 1996 she was the recipient of the Jess Rath Award for her endless hours of volunteer work. She delivered Meals on Wheels, repaired residents clothing at Crestwood Care Center and was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, to name a few. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as a deacon, was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Women's Circle.

She cherished the time spent with her family, enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, and making crafts. An avid reader, she also enjoyed crossword puzzles, exercising, walking and traveling.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jane (Dean) Johnston of Santa Barbara, California and Judy (Fred) Montes of Santa Maria, California; five grandchildren, Matthew (Kirsten) Johnston, Jason Johnston, Vince (Lea) Montes, Fred (Alida) Montes, Jr. and Josh (Anna) Montes; nine grandchildren, Melissa and Nathan Johnston, Angel, Breanna, Kylan, Jade, Logan, Talon, and Cason Montes; her sister, Robie (Bill) Miller of Mineral Wells, Texas, sister-in-law, Mary Samuels, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry ter Braak in 1977, sister, Dorothy Dorlac, four brothers, her twin, Earl "Sam", Roy and Bill Samuels.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby with Phil Pearson officiating. Private family burial services will be held in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Y Community Center, 111 West Smiley Ave., Shelby, OH 44875. A loving thank you to special friends Paula, Jeri, Marvel, Lou, and Marcie along with church friends and all the daughters' friends growing up.
