Reverend Willie Haynes Sewell Gaines Jr.

MANSFIELD: Rev. Willie Hayes Sewell Gaines, Jr., 72, passed this life, Sunday, July 6, 2014 in his home after an extended illness.

Willie was born on Thursday, May 28, 1942 to the late Willie H. and Maggie Evans Sewell Gaines, Sr. in Mansfield and was a life long resident. He was a veteran of the US Navy, and retired from the Mansfield City Schools in 2007 after 28 years of service. Willie was a member of the Maddox Memorial COGIC (formerly Temple of Faith COGIC) where he became an Associate Minister. Rev. Sewell was appointed the pastor of the Solid Rock Church Of God In Christ in Marion in 1987 and he would remain there for the next 27 years. He was also founded the New Destiny Church Of God In Christ in Columbus in 1999. In 2008 he became the Superintendent of the Mansfield/Marion District and in 2011 Rev. Sewell assumed the position of Administrative Assistant in the Ohio Central East Jurisdiction of the Church Of God In Christ.

Willie is survived by two sisters: Patricia B. Ford, Mansfield, and Assistant Supervisor Karen R. Bowen, Columbus; one brother: Jonathan L. Sewell, Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews including Eldora Alanis, Dr. Alynicia Bowen, Rebonous Sewell and Aisha Sewell; three aunts: Mother Ludie Lancaster, Deborah Evans, Canton and Mary Evans, Chicago; one uncle: Lawrence (Evelyn) Evans, St. Albans, New York.

In addition to his parents Willie was also preceded in death by his sister Brenda J. Long; and brother, Ralph R. Sewell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 9 a.m. in the Maddox Memorial COGIC with Bishop David L. Herron, Sr., Prelate of Ohio Central East Jurisdiction, of Warren officiating. Friends may call Friday, in Maddox Memorial from 4-6 p.m. where a Service of Remembrance will be held from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Marion at a future date. Interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery, with Military honors held at the graveside by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail.

The family will also receive friends at the home Rev. Sewell's sister Patricia at 617 Sackman daily till the day of the funeral service.
