Robert Hilty

HURON: Robert W. Hilty, noted artist and retired Lutheran minister, went home to be with his Lord at Firelands Hospital, Sandusky, Friday evening, October 29, 2010 after a long illness.

Bob was born in Orville, Ohio, February 8, 1932. He graduated from Orville High School, graduated with a BA degree from Wittenberg University where he was "Athlete of the Year" in swimming, and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Bob received a call to the ministry and entered Hamma Divinity School for theological training and served for 20 years as a Lutheran minister at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Massilon; Messiah Lutheran Ch. In Lyndhurst; and Redeemer Lutheran Ch, in Elyria. In 1979 he began pursuing his love of painting. In 1983, he was named "artist of the year" by Ducks Unlimited.

His art has been carried in 200 galleries across the U.S. He taught painting at Firelands BGSU Campus and gave private lessons in his home studio for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Elnor of 34 years; one son, Todd (Katie) Hilty of North Ridgeville; four daughters, Dr. Brenda Douglas of Canton, OH, Karen Hilty of West Hills, CA, Brenda Sadoski, and Sherry Glatte both of Huron; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; a brother, Lowell Hilty of Dellroy, OH; and sister, Jean Stickles of Akron.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel (Brillhart) and Evert Hilty.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 930 Main Street, Huron, and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to time of service 11 a.m. at the Church, with Rev. Raymond Vance officiating.

Burial will be in Grove Street Cemetery, New London at a later date.
