CRAIG SCHWARZ Obituary

Craig Davis Schwarz Age 74 was hospitalized on a return trip from his beloved Alaska to San Francisco and died on July 2, 2014 in Burien, WA. He was born to Herman Karl Schwarz and Deloris Owen Schwarz in San Francisco, CA. He married Martha Louise Rice on January 22, 1966 in San Luis Obispo. Their children are June Marie Schwarz and Scott Arthur Schwarz. He is survived by sister Sondra K. Parsons (James), brother Herman A Schwarz and was preceded in death by sister Susan E. Huebsch (Fritz). He is survived by brother-in-law L. Lyle Rice (Sandy) and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Craig attended George Washington High School and The City College of San Francisco where he was a record holding swimmer. He was a submariner serving on the USS Swordfish 579 before attending California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree. He joined the family business as the third generation of the Schwarz Sausage Company in San Francisco. He lived his life in San Francisco, Larkspur and Aleknagik, AK. Craig was a true artisan, a hands-on polymath, and over a rich and fascinating lifetime he seriously followed his interests from propagating Japanese maples, beekeeping, botany, carpentry, farming to spending winters off the grid in a cabin in Alaska. He held a life long interest in hunting and fishing. He was the staunchest of friends; one of his greatest talents was his ability to relate genuinely to anyone he met. He embodied, as much as anyone can, virtue. He was brave, steadfast, and generous, with a kind and subtle sense of humor. Craig waged a determined battle against cancer and was blessed during the years of treatment to continue traveling and having adventures. He was fortunate to be surrounded by family and a family of friends, who are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Larkspur home on July 26, 2014 between two and five in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UCSF Foundation in the memory of Craig Schwarz - Prostate Cancer research fund #: B2335. P.O. Where does one start to try and explain the term a “friend” There are casual, extended, long distance, close, personal, intimate and ever so many other terms to commence a description of friendship.

All of these descriptive terms and/or combination of them, seem inadequate to accurately describe the relationship and/or friendship that Craig and I shared together.

On one hand, we had a lot in common. We served in the Submarine Service, Nuclear Navy and I in the Diesel Boat Navy. He was smarter than I.

We enjoyed hunting, fishing a good game of gin and downed a few manhattans together at the Volanti Duck Club and truly enjoyed our many memorable days together, so much fun, confirmed by the belly shaking laughs.

On the other hand, I am sort of a “extravert” and Craig was clearly in some cases, was somewhat of a conservative “introvert”, whereas typically people like that do not have much in common, but he an I have a created a special bond of friendship that few people rarely share.

He brought so much joy into my life, such as the day he planned and set up blind # 5 at the Volanti Duck Club, where Orlindo Barsetti said that Craig radioed in that I better “get out there with Craig” because the Birds were flying...... like crazy ”

So Orlindo agreed to boat me out to be with Craig, It was hot sunny day, blue sky and clearly no ducks in the air, but when we arrived at the blind, there was, instead of duck decoys, but an array of at least a dozen pink flamenco decoys on stilts, with a small board set up between the two barrels, a deck of cards with a adequate supply of Manhattans and the face of Craig Schwarz, with a broad ear to ear smile on his face, get in the blind “Now” ! What a memorable day, but an example of one of ever so many that we shared over the years.

This was only one of many goofy incidents, but exemplifies his rare and wry sense of humor and the special friendship we created, shared and perpetuated during his time on this earth.

I will surely miss him as I considered an honor and privilege to have known and be with him for so many years. He may be gone, but surely never forgotten.

"BROTHERS FOREVER"

On behalf of all of: Craig's Shipmates, of the United States
Submarine Veterans Inc., Mare Island Base, Vallejo, CA,
"My Favorite Prayer, of a Submariner's Life"; {Printed, below,
with the Kind-Permission of the Original Author: Mike Bickel"}!

When we were young and feeling our oats, we joined the navy and went on those boats,
that sank on purpose, sliding into the sea. Nobody knew where we're going to be,

except, for a few, who charted the way, to a far off coastline, or a secret bay,
The rest of us did, what we're trained to do, and trusted each other, - but prayed a lot, too.

In a sewer-pipe coffin we just did our jobs, pulling sticks, cycling vents or adjusting some knobs.
When “all-hell”, broke loose, we knew what was best, because we had dolphins, affixed to our chest.

But although we knew every valve on the boat, that made it submerge, or caused it to float,
it wasn't dolphins, or qualcards, or years-worth of studies, that would save us,

but rather, our crewmates, our buddies! Many stood by us then, but they stand here, no more,
On Eternal Patrol, they have left their last shore. Husbands, and Fathers, and Grandfathers, too,

who sailed with us, challenged us, under the blue. Forever a mate, forever our friend we're
bonded, as shipmates, beyond our lives'-end. We pray for them now, as we prayed with them, then.

May you rest in peace, always, my brothers, -- Amen."

{Our sincere thanks and appreciation, to both shipmates, Mike, for creating, the prayer; and to
Tom Foglesong SK2(SS), for thinking of his MIB Shipmates, here, and for sharing the piece with us,
at our 05/21/2011, meeting. It is, ever-so meaningful, particularly to all submariners, and it reminds us
all, of our close-knit comradery, and especially of our "Creed" to Perpetuate the Memories of Those,
Who have Voluntarily, given, Their Time, and in Oh-So-Many-Cases, Their Lives, for our Country,
and for our "Freedoms", which obviously, actually, Are Not "Free"} !

Diesel Boats Forever, {DBF} and/or Nukes, too, and;

Highest Regards, and Sincere Condolences, to Your Entire Family,
Always-Remembered, and Never-Forgotten !

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our most sincere condolences and sympathy to all of Craig's family and friends in this time of sorrow and grief. God bless you with peace, comfort, and heal your broken hearts. We are especially thankful for Craig's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service where he qualified in submarines on the USS Swordfish SSN-579 in 1957. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive.

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

Craig Davis Schwarz, QM2(SS), US Navy, Now on Eternal Patrol.
Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate
His record is now posted online in the Eternal Patrol file on the USSVI website.

Sailor, rest your oar
When your final dive is made, and your battery's running low,
You'll know there lies a boat for you many fathoms here below,
With your annunciators jammed on full and your depth gauge needles bent,
Your accumulator's dry of oil and your air banks all are spent,
It's then you get to wonderin', "is my life's boat rigged for dive?"
Your guessing drill commences, "am i dead or still alive?"
You pace the flooded decks with scorn and curse the flaws of man.
Into realms of rex you've stepped, and here you'll make your stand.
To live your life, as sailors must, at the bottom of the sea.
There's one you'll have to reckon-that one, my friend, is thee.
Will your conscience do you justice when the final muster's in?
Did you lead the kind of life you should in every port you've been?
The answers to these questions and many, many more,
Are locked in the hearts of sailormen from Cannes to Singapore.
So, when your day for mast rolls 'round. the choice is up to you,
Sailor chart your course of life right now. chart it straight and true.
Now's the time to flood your tanks and trim up 'fore and aft.
It's a trifle late when the klaxon sounds to square away your craft.
Your final billet lies below, on "old ocean's" floor.
So, be ready when that last word's passed.

Sailor, rest your oar!
