Barney Pia Obituary
Barney Pia On April 28th 2018 Barney Pia, (62) died peacefully in his home in Petaluma, surrounded by loved ones. Survived by his father Jack Pia, his two brothers Michael and Matt Pia, and his niece and nephew Amelia and Toby. Born in England in 1956, the middle of three brothers, Barney grew up in the St Albans area of England. He began his advertising career at Dorlands in London, moving to LA in 1985 to work at Chiat Day. It was there that he discovered that the blood-clotting factor he had been given in England during surgery, had been tainted with the HIV virus. Undaunted he moved to Sausalito CA and joined the Marin Aids Project as a Benefits Counselor and Trainer. This began a journey for Barney of working with fellow HIV infected and advocating for their support and dignity using his research and planning expertise. In 1996 Barney branched out on his own, opening and running The Positive Center in San Anselmo, a place offering free benefits counselling and support for people with life threatening illnesses. He ingeniously funded it with a beautiful storefront called Positive Living. In 1997 Barney was awarded the Martin Luther King Award for Humanitarian Service, a fitting tribute to a man that had given so much back to others in need. Towards the end Barney could be seen daily, walking slowly round his neighborhood, chatting to all the neighbors, offering them advice about their gardens and revelling in whatever flowers were growing. Barney's kitchen was always filled with flowers. On the wall was a saying that he loved, and strived to live by. "Be always decent and honorable even amid the chaos and adversity." Memorial gathering on Sunday July 29th at 3:00-6:00 pm. All welcome. Contact Teresa, (415 686 3273) or Rachel (415 690 9809) for further details.
